The Bearded Trio

Waking up to sad news this morning as we learn that Sir John Hurt has died at the age of 77 from cancer.  The actor had been treated for pancreatic cancer in 2015 and at one point had been given the all clear. Sir John was knighted in 2015 for his services to drama. After his cancer diagnosis the same year, he told the Radio Times: "I can't say I worry about mortality, but it's impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it. "We're all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly." Hurt will be remembered for roles in Alien and The Elephant Man.  He also appeared in the fourth Indiana Jones movie in 2008 where he played Professor Oxley in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  Harry Potter fans will remember him as  Mr Ollivander.  J K Rowling, tweeted: "So very sad to hear that the immensely talented and deeply beloved John Hurt has died. Spoilers for the Doctor Who series nine finale, "Hell Bent." Well, that's a wrap on series nine of Doctor Who! Are you caught up? What did you think? "Hell Bent" saw the Doctor back on his home planet of Gallifrey and, after the events of "Heaven Sent," he wasn't in the best of moods. Spoilers for the Doctor Who episode "Sleep No More." The latest episode of Doctor Who , "Sleep No More," was a rarity for series 9 -- a self-contained story. Not only that, it was modeled on the "found footage" trend made popular in recent years, with hand-held cameras making it appear as if every scene was shot by the characters themselves, leading to a twist in the plot. And, yes, there was no opening title sequence! I had to go back and replay the first few minutes, thinking somehow I'd missed it. Some new ground for Doctor Who , to be sure. Written by Mark Gatiss, the episode posits what would happen if workers could get a month's worth of sleep in just five minutes for the ultimate purpose of making them more productive. It was just announced that the Doctor Who Christmas Special will be screened in select theaters across the U.S. on December 28 and 29! The latest Doctor Who two-parter concluded this past weekend, so it's a good time to catch up on both episodes, "The Zygon Invasion" and "The Zygon Inversion," with some behind-the-scenes action. Spoilers ahead for last Saturday's episode of Doctor Who , "The Woman Who Lived!" So, after all the rumors and rampant speculation, we now know the truth of Ashildr -- or, rather, Me. She is uniquely her own person, not the newest incarnation of a previous character. Turns out, she's a fascinating character, as well. We always imagine immortality would be a great thing -- but, would it really? This episode suggests the cons outweigh the pros. It remains to be seen if Ashildr/Me will make a return appearance, although that final seflie shot certainly hints at a strong possibility. The BBC has announced a new Doctor Who spin-off show geared toward a young adult audience. Titled Class , the show will consist of eight 45-minute episodes, and it is being written by YA author, Patrick Ness ( A Monster Calls , The Knife of Never Letting Go ). Here's the official synopsis: Class is a YA series set in contemporary London. Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. It's been rumored for the last week or so, but today it's official -- Jenna Coleman confirmed she is leaving Doctor Who . She joined the series as companion Clara Oswald -- aka The Impossible Girl -- in 2012, during Matt Smith's tenure as the Eleventh Doctor, and is currently teamed up with Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi. However, her time in the TARDIS has come to an end as she has filmed her final scenes. Coleman said her exit has "been in the works for a long time" and she has already been cast as the Queen in the upcoming ITV series Victoria . On leaving the show, Coleman had this to say: "There's not a lot of jobs where you can go to work and have a spaceship and an alien as your best mate and also run away from monsters," she joked of her decision to leave.
