The Wizard of Oz Is The First Film Feature On The AFI Movie Club Movies are more important than ever right now as we all look to self-isolate during the current world outbreak of CoVid-19.  So as a result the good folks over at The AFI including Steven Spielberg have launched The AFI Movie Club . The initiative hopefully will encourage you to stay at home and revisit old classics.  There will be virtual tools too to discuss the movies that are on offer and the first one is the beautiful classic, The Wizard of Oz from 1939.  Steven Spielberg says in his introduction video:  "Now I know you think you’ve seen it, but think again, because right now at this moment in history what better message is there than ‘there’s no place like home’?" Steven Spielberg was interviewed at the AFI (American Film Institute) in 1978 during a seminar with AFI Fellows. In this clip he talks about how he approaches storyboarding. Interestingly enough, the young man asking the question is Bob Mandel, who is now the Dean of the AFI Conservatory. Composer John Williams was honoured by Hollywood Thursday for a glittering and stunning career spanning seven decades of classic film scores, including his most famous work on "Star Wars" and "Jaws." Steven Spielberg presented John Williams, 84 with the American Film Institute (AFI) Award -- billed "America's highest honour for a career in film" -- at a gala event at the Dolby Theatre.  Spielberg said: “Without John Williams, bikes don’t really fly. About time!  John Williams is FINALLY going to be honoured by The American Film Institute.  It should have happened sooner but so happy it's happening.  John Williams will be honoured with the 44th AFI Life Achievement Award.  It will be the first time a composer has won the honour. Williams has won five academy award wins and hold the record for most Academy Awards nominations, forty-nine in total. “John Williams has written the soundtrack to our lives,” said Sir Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI board of trustees.  “Note by note, through chord and chorus, his genius for marrying music with movies has elevated the art form to symphonic levels and inspired generations of audiences to be enriched by the magic of the movies." Williams will be honoured at a gala Tribute on June 9, 2016 in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast in late June 2016 on TNT, followed by an encore presentation on its sister network, Turner Classic Movies. John Williams fan, John Wesley Downey has created a Youtube video to start a worthy campaign.  To get the AFI (American Film Institute) to give a Lifetime Achievement Award to our favourite composer.  As John points out in the video, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford have all won the award but John Williams hasn't.  It seems strange considering the huge contribution John Williams has brought to their work and others including us fans all around the world.
