The winners of the 43rd Annual Saturn Awards were announced yesterday and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story picked up three awards.  Steven Spielberg's The BFG picked up two and well done to Dave Filoni and the team for Star Wars Rebels for picking up an award for best TV Animated Series. The Saturn Award is the official honor presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The Academy has been voting these awards for three decades. The Saturn Awards are almost upon us.  The awards focus on Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films which often gets overlooked at other awards, especially the big ones.  This year marks the 43rd Annual Saturn Awards and Star Wars and Steven Spielberg are well represented. Rogue One has picked up 11 nominations including best director, best actress and best film music.  In fact Michael Giacchino is represented twice in that category, the other for Doctor Strange.  He will have to go up against the great John Williams who is nominated for The BFG.  In fact Steven Spielberg's The BFG gets 10 nods, one less than Rogue One but it's nice to see the movie getting the recognition it deserves.  Steven Spielberg is in the mix for best director and the late and great Melissa Mathison posthumous gets a nomination for best film screenplay. But as film critics, we come to praise 2016, not to bury it. Choosing the best films of the year can be a daunting task, and it should be noted that we have not yet seen the Awards season's biggest wildcard, Martin Scorsese's Silence. Steven Spielberg's new favorite actor closes out 2016 with an even bigger honor than the Oscar he won earlier this years for Bridge of Spies.  Variety   reports that Mark Rylance has made Queen Elizabeth's New Year's Honors List, and is to be knighted for his significant contributions to the British theatre. It seems fitting for the actor who played Spielberg's BFG to recieve this honor from the very Queen he teams with in the film to save the children of England from the threat of the nasty giants, and we congratulate him on the honor. If you're a fan of Steven Spielberg then you will know how talented Melissa Mathison was having written E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and returning three decades later to write the script for Spielberg's latest, The BFG.  Steven Spielberg pays tribute to the talented writer: “Even though I only really worked with Melissa couple of times, mainly on ‘E.T.’, to bookend our relationship with two stories deeply from the heart of mostly Mathison, you know… ‘E.T.’ might have been my story, but the depth of that story and the way that story was told, came from Melissa’s heart as did ‘The BFG’.” Melissa Mathison died 4 November 2015 following a battle with cancer.
