Douglas Slocombe And His Special Skills We often say how much of a genius John Williams is for the epic music he creates, or the directing talents of Steven Spielberg but movies that become classics are a collaboration of talented people at the peak of their skills and careers.   When you celebrate a movie franchise such as Indiana Jones which marks its 40th anniversary this year, we should thank the whole of the cast for the movies that we enjoy and here at The Bearded Trio we do thank them.  However, there should be a time when we pin-point particular talents that made the Indiana Jones movies unique in look, sound and feel.   Douglas Slocombe is one of those people that should be mentioned.  The look of the Indy movies is thanks to the talents of this lighting wizard. Sad news as we learn British cinematographer Douglas Slocombe has died at the age of 103, his family has said.  Slocombe shot over a hundred movies and became one of the finest cinematographers who ever lived.  Steven Spielberg chose Slocombe to shoot Raiders of the Lost Ark as well as the other two Indy movies.  He was in his 70's when Spielberg asked him! From the BBC : In 1939 he filmed some of the earliest fighting of World War Two in Poland. He won Baftas for the Great Gatsby, The Servant, and Julia, while his other work included the Italian Job and Jesus Christ Superstar. Among his own favourites was Kind Hearts and Coronets, the Ealing Studios classic of 1949, starring Alec Guinness and Joan Greenwood. A decade earlier, as a young newsreel cameraman, London-born Slocombe had shot parts of the Nazi invasion of Poland. “Duggie” as he is affectionately known Douglas Slocombe Turns 100 One of cinema’s great cinematographers turned 100 years old on Sunday, February 10th. His name is Douglas Slocombe or "Duggie" as he is affectionately known. When you see his filmography you can see why he is so respected in Hollywood and the rest of the world. Indiana Jones just wouldn't have been the same without Duggie. Whether its seeing the shadows bouncing off Indy's face or the silhouette of our hero with a blazing sunset in the background you can see why Spielberg called him back for all the Indy movies and even the fourth one cinematographer Janusz Kaminski made sure the feel of Douglas Slocombe was maintained.
