Part Three: Out of Africa To celebrate the 35th anniversary of The Color Purple, Mark Marshall who was Steven Spielberg's assistant from 84-88  has graciously decided to share his memories and pictures from the making of that groundbreaking movie.  Mark Marshall - Sept 3rd, 1985, 35 years ago, "The Color Purple," having wrapped location shooting in North Carolina, began its last two days of Principal Photography in Africa - actually Newhall Ranch thirty miles north of Los Angeles.  The picture opened in limited release just 15 weeks later. George Lucas and Ron Howard George Lucas has visited the set of Ron Howards' Solo movie which of course will give us a back story on everyone's favourite smuggler, Han Solo. There's an article in Entertainment Weekly and it reveals Lucas was being shown around the set of the movie.  While he was on the Millennium Falcon George came up with a small suggestion for the movie.  According to Kathleen Kennedy it's a funny one and Ron Howard, the director loved it so much that it's staying in the film.  Kennedy tells us: “He had intended to just kind of stop by and say hi, and he stayed five hours...There’s even one little moment in a scene that — I can’t tell you what, sorry — but in the scene on the Millennium Falcon where George said, ‘Why doesn’t Han just do this.’”  Kennedy adds that the suggestion is a "funny little bit that will probably get a laugh." There's a new Steven Spielberg interview over at Hollywood Reporter and in it he reveals how he had a telling off from Kathleen Kennedy while filming E.T. The Extra Terrestrial for being too impatient with his crew.  It changed the way he worked and ultimately his image.  He said: “Basically, I was a little bit of a hothead, impatient, and I would be hard on my crew — loving to my cast but tough on my crew.” Spielberg continued: “And about 15 days into shooting E.T., she pulled me into her office and sat me down in a chair and gave me the b******ing of my life, because she did not like the way I was talking to the crew. “She didn't care for my impatience, she didn't care for my sharpness. “She said, ‘This is unacceptable behaviour,’ and I hadn't heard that since a teacher in school or my own mom — and that was a big shift in my life. “I became mindful because somebody I trusted and respected had called me out.” On Nov. 28, THR gathered Spielberg, 70, and ...

"So about those Jedi" In an interview with Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy over at Entertainment Weekly she revealed how George Lucas is not much of a factor these days when it comes to Star Wars but still offers some specific advice from time to time. “Not really,” Kathleen Kennedy said when ask if Lucas contributes anymore. “But he’ll whisper in my ear every now and then. Usually it’s something specific or important to him about Jedi training. Things like that.” “I think he’s starting to settle into this and just be a fan,” she continues. “It’s taken a while. It’s hard to let go, after 40 years. That’s a lot of expectation and things he thought a lot about. Suddenly that next generation, that whole thematic idea he came up with, is in process.” It's interesting that she adds "things like that."  It's not just the Jedi or their training but she used that as an example.  I wonder what other Star Wars specifics is important to George Lucas.  ...

A new BFI commissioned report released tonight reveals that there are significant opportunities for the film workforce with an estimated 10,000 new entrants to the industry needed and 30,000 job opportunities over the next five years. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said she wouldn't dream of messing around with George Lucas's vision of Star Wars.  In other words, the original theatrical cuts of Star Wars are to stay in the hands of George Lucas.  This, will of course upset a lot of Star Wars fans who have a desire to watch the original trilogy they remember from the 70s and 80s. "I wouldn't touch those, are you kidding me?," she told the Steele Wars podcast, "Those will always remain his." In the late 90s, George Lucas made changes to the original trilogy.  Some of the changes included rings around explosions and the now infamous 'Greedo shot first' scene. Kathleen Kennedy has been busy promoting Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and even though the film has just hit screens, Star Wars fans are already wanting more.  Fans are questioning when the next anthology movie will be out and also a trailer for Star Wars Episode VIII. During an interview Kennedy revealed the Han Solo movie will start shooting in February with Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Also the Lucasfilm president was questioned when we will get  a trailer for Star Wars Episode VIII. It seems that George Lucas had been working on Star Wars after the Prequels and actually had written down three or four ideas for standalone movies according to Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly Kennedy said "George talked to me about doing [standalone films] when I first came aboard [in 2012]. He had often thought about doing it and he had actually written down three or four thoughts and ideas, directions you could go."  Ultimately Disney didn't like the ideas and went in a different direction. “We talked a lot about the Jedi and the foundational ideas that George had thought about when he created the mythology. It was sort of spit-balling ideas.” "Obviously inside the mythology there were lots of opportunities.
