'Under the Dome' Coming to an End

CBS announced today that Under the Dome will come to end with the episode airing September 10. Originally planned as a limited run, the series, based on Stephen King's novel and produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, has lasted three seasons -- so it's probably fair to say it had a good run. "Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world," said CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler . "Dome’s event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo . We’re excited to present the final chapter in Chester’s Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up." We'll find out what happens when the dome finally comes down in the concluding episodes of Under the Dome , airing Thursdays on CBS at 9/8c. ...

CBS Renews 'Under the Dome' and 'Extant'

Well, this is a good day for Steven Spielberg!   Under the Dome and Extant , both shows executive-produced by Spielberg, have been renewed by CBS - Dome for a third season, and Extant for a second season. Under the Dome has been a collaborative effort between author Stephen King (the series is loosely based on his novel of the same name) and Spielberg, with both acting as executive producers.  Extant star Halle Berry shares co-executive producing credit with Spielberg on that series. During its second season, Under the Dome averaged 11 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic, while Extant averaged 8.64 million.  Ratings were up for the Extant season finale, so that probably helped its chances for renewal. CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler had this to say about the decision: “We’re committed to delivering our viewers and advertisers year-round programming with a wide variety of storytelling.   We continue to see summer as a great place for ...

'Extant' Season Finale to Air One Week Earlier Than Expected

It looks like the sci-fi drama starring Halle Berry,  Extant,  will be wrapping its season a bit earlier than originally planned.  The final episode of the season was scheduled to air during premiere week - but that would put it up against stiff competition, such as the season premieres of Modern Family and Law & Order: SVU .  As it stands now, the season will wrap up a week earlier on September 17.  The change means that CBS will air two episodes back-to-back on Wednesday, August 20. In an attempt to boost lackluster ratings, CBS recently moved Extant to the 10 p.m. time slot.  However, rather than improve, ratings merely held steady with 5.92 million viewers within the 18-49 age demographic.  While it did beat its competition on ABC and NBC, it remains to be seen if that’s enough to ensure a future for the Steven Spielberg-produced show. The Early Numbers are in for the 'Extant' Series Premiere

Extant , the new series from executive producer Steven Spielberg, premiered last night on CBS and, based on early numbers, it looks like it had a broader appeal with the older demographic. The first episode of the highly anticipated sci-fi drama had an estimated 9.4 million viewers, with 1.7 rating for the 18-49 demographic.  Among the 25-54 demo, it earned a 2.4 rating.  There was a drop in younger viewers from the lead-in episode of Big Brother. Of course, this being summer, many viewers DVR their programming - and CBS has a deal with Amazon Prime, which will release episodes of Extant four days after they premiere on the network.  It's likely the ratings will experience a bump when all those numbers are tallied. Long story short - The premiere was respectable, but not quite as much as was expected. (My own opinion - It was an intriguing premiere with a lot of potential.  I'll keep tuning in!) A Few Things You Should Know About Steven Spielberg's Extant

The new series from Steven Spielberg, Extant , will debut is just over a month, and The Hollywood Reporter has a list of the five things you need to know : 1. The series will follow a model just like its summer companion  Under the Dome, meaning if the show is successful, it would continue on with a second season -- with Berry returning as its lead, producers said. In other words, don't let its billing as an "event" or "limited" series throw you -- this is a cable model 13-episode drama. "We love the idea of season two being the sequel to this," Walker said. "The threat we establish in season one … will continue in season two." 2. The series poses an essential question: "What makes us human? Can machines be human?" showrunner Walker said, noting that what makes us human is as much of a draw to aliens as anything Extant explores. "[This] deals with a lot of familiar themes, and we're rooted in family story." ...
