Cinematic life for George Lucas didn't start with either American Graffiti or Star Wars . George attended the famous USC and made a couple of shorts and even won an award for one of these college-shorts in 1967. In the meantime however he did his best to become noticed as a filmmaker, even before his graduation. In 1963 he became a Production Assistant of Haskell Wexler on a documentary he made on a group of people who went to Washington to take part in a big demonstration for civil rights. The documentary is called The Bus , received a cinematic release in 1965 and hasn't been released on DVD yet (as far as I could see). However, the 10 minute clip above, released by Haskell himself some 2 years ago, could give you an idea of the film. Just for the records: Haskell Wexler, now aged 93, is still working as a Director of Photography at this moment. Ronny.
