British 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' Has Spielberg Question That Stumps Contestant And Audience In tonight's episode of 'Who Want's To Be A Millionaire' here in the UK, the £16,000 question involved a little bit of Steven Spielberg knowledge.  The question was: Which other Steven Spielberg film was released in the same year as 'Schindler's List'? A - Hook B - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade C - Saving Private Ryan D - Jurassic Park Of course, most readers of this site will know the answer but unfortunately for the contestant he was stumped.  Using his lifeline 'ask the audience' they turned out to be no use either, choosing 'Hook' as the answer.  A 50/50 lifeline was also used, leaving 'Hook' and 'Jurassic Park'.  We all know the answer to be D - 'Jurassic Park' but the contestant opted to choose 'Hook' losing £7,000. The career of Steven Spielberg has been vast. Spanning five decades, he has crossed genres with more success than most of his contemporaries. In the grand scheme of cinema I believe that those who are drawn to his masterful work can be categorized into two groups.  This partition between the two revolves around his seminal classic Schindler's List and separates his career into two parts. While his films, early and recent alike, follow common themes; there is also a subtle divide. These themes ranging from the lost boy to obsessions to family issues have been orchestrated throughout the majority of his films. For the purpose of this essay let's call them Pre-93 and Post-93: the former being prior to 1993 and Schindler's List, the latter being everything 1993 and on. Today sees the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.  The scene of horrific crimes against humanity where some 1.1 million people, the majority being Jews were killed between 1940 and 1945. Survivors as well as director of Schindler's List, Steven Spielberg were in attendance at the camp to pay their respects and remember the awful history which hopefully will never be forgotten.  Spielberg said at one point "memory is life...memory is life." Yesterday Mr Spielberg was talking to a group of Holocaust survivors in Krakow, Poland.  He expressed his concerns for the rising tide of  anti-Semitism from people who were provoking hate crimes.  He warned that Jews were threatened by “the perennial demons of intolerance”.  He also said: 'If you are a Jew today, in fact if you are any person who believes in the freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom in free expression, you know that like many other groups, we are once again facing the...

The foundation that Steven Spielberg founded after being inspired by Holocaust survivors he met while filming Schindler's List  is marking its 20th anniversary this year. The USC Shoah Foundation has collected the testimonies of 51,413 survivors in 34 languages from 58 countries - surpassing expectations Spielberg had when he created the foundation in 1994.  The scope of the foundation has grown to include those who have survived genocides in countries such as Rwanda, Cambodia, and Armenia. The foundation hosts a searchable digital archive used both for education and outreach.  Spielberg himself visits schools so he can share some of the collected testimonies with young people.  Admittedly, at first they're more interested in discussing movies, but their focus shifts as those testimonies are presented. Oliwia Dabrowska, 24, who played the little girl in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, wished she listened to the director's advice. The advice was not to watch the film until she was 18. Unfortunately Dabrowska broke her promise to the director and watched the movie when only 11 and it horrified her what she watched. Oliwia told The Times: 'It was too horrible. I could not understand much, but I was sure that I didn't want to watch ever again in my life.' In the film, Ms Dabrowska plays a ‘little girl in the red coat’ spotted by Nazi industrialist Oskar Schindler during the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto in 1943. She told the newspaper: 'I kept it secret for a long, long time, though at high school people got to know on the internet.  'People said: "It must be so important to you, you must know so much about the Holocaust." Haaretz.com have reported that Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List archive has been transferred this week from California to Warsaw, specifically the museum of the history of Polish Jews in Warsaw. The archive includes dozens of boxes that are filled with testimonies which were unloaded over the weekend at the museum.  These testimonies are from 52000 interviewees in 57 countries which were interviewed over a six year period. Haaretz.com write: The testimonies, which were collected from 52,000 interviewees in 57 countries, though mostly from the United States, are of inestimable historical value. They tell not only about the conditions of life and death during the Holocaust, but also about the lives of Jews, Roma, homosexuals and Hitler’s political opponents during the years before World War II. Steven Spielberg is preparing to mark the 20th anniversary of his harrowing World War II epic Schindler's List with a series of special charity screenings. Spielberg has personally supervised the meticulous restoration of the Holocaust movie, which was originally released in November 1993, and screenings of the remastered version will benefit the USC Shoah Foundation's Institute for Visual History and Education. The director founded the charity organisation in 1994 as a result of his experiences making the film. The series will debut with a special benefit screening at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 12 September (13), the day before the start of Jewish religious festival Yom Kippur.
