Star Wars Arcade – A Look Back At A Piece Of Art

Ever since I first watched Star Wars in 1977 I’ve wanted to be part of that wonderful and mysterious galaxy far far away.  In the beginning my Kenner Star Wars figures helped me with that craving but it wasn’t until I was on a British holiday camp in the early eighties did I realise there was another form of entertainment that could overload your senses and place you right in the middle of the Death Star attack.  Of course that medium was video gaming and it all started with the Star Wars Arcade machine. I was at a Pontins or Butlins holiday park in the early eighties and in the small arcade room that they had, were the usual array of pinball machines, fruit machines and the odd video games machine.  Defender, Space Invaders and Galaxian were the standard for those days.  But something caught my eye or rather my ears.  I could hear the familiar Star Wars theme being played.  I scanned the room eagerly, trying to determine where it was coming from and then I saw it!  There in the mi

Why Star Wars And Star Trek Need Each Other

I’m proud to call myself a Star wars fan and also a Star Trek fan. Ever since I was a child, and particularly with the advent of the internet, the two franchises have generally been seen as two camps. Either you’re a Star Wars fan or a Star Trek fan. You can’t be in both camps is the general consensus with fans. I’ve seen fans at comic cons get quite irate explaining why their love for their chosen franchise is better than the other one. This could be seen as just passionate and there’s nothing wrong with that. But there is definitely a more serious side to the fan base and sometimes a little ugly. On The Bearded Trio site we cover Star Wars and Star Trek.  I’ve had emails from Star Wars fans asking why I have Star Trek material on my site and that I should stop. I’ve even been called a traitor. I’m always happy to explain that I love both Star Wars and Star Trek equally and the two are in my opinion closer than most people think. Yes there are huge differences between the two

Admiral Ackbar voice actor Erik Bauersfeld dies at 93

"It's a trap" is one of the most memorable lines from the Star Wars movies and sadly, the voice actor who provided those lines has died at the age of 93. Erik Bauersfeld provided the voice for Admiral Ackbar in 1983's Return of the Jedi and his one line would later spawn a whole range of merchandising and become a popular internet meme. Bauersfeld died on Sunday at his home in California, his manager told the Associated Press. Bauersfeld mainly worked in radio before his Star Wars roles. He also provided the voice for Jabba the Hutt's ghostly steward Bib Fortuna in Return of the Jedi. Admiral Ackbar and Bauersfeld returned for a cameo role in last year's Star Wars sequel The Force Awakens. Rebels Repercussions

The season 2 finale of Star Wars Rebels was some of the best Star Wars we’ve gotten ever. Bold statement I know, but it’s true in my opinion. As soon as it was over, I needed to write about it; I needed to talk about it with anyone who was willing to discuss it. There’s so much to talk about! Twitter feeds blew up. Facebook posts on the finale dominated my Facebook page. I wanted to write about it, but I knew that it needed multiple viewings and notes needed to be taken. There were just too many thoughts going through my head as I watched. So here are some of the thoughts I jotted down while watching. Enough talk let’s get on with.      Okay so my first thought is how much this episode of Star Wars Rebels mirrored not only Star Wars : Episode V The Empire Strikes Back ,  as Dave Filoni has said at the Season 2 Finale Red Carpet, that this is “ The Empire Strikes Back of our story so far”, (what better Star Wars film than The Empire Strikes Back to model an episo

What the Force Awakens Means to Me

It is April 1st as I write this. The Force Awakens has been out for about three and a half months and it was released digitally at midnight. I have seen the movie nine times in theaters. The hype has began to lessen. My wife and I go to stores and she'll point to a display area and say "this used to be all Star Wars." We shake our heads and say "the end of the era." The hype leading up to and during the Force Awakens' run was pretty monumental. You could not go anywhere without being inundated with Star Wars items. This is hardly a new experience, as the hype leading up to the Phantom Menace (which was even larger with good reason, it being the first Star Wars film in sixteen years) is  well documented . But this time Disney was leading the parade and that is a clear difference maker. The marketing campaign was overwhelming for some, especially non-enthusiasts, but never got to me too much. Mostly I was simply over the moon about a new Star Wars movie. I
