Duel and Columbo Composer, Billy Goldenberg Dies Age 84

More sad news as we learn that Emmy-winning composer, Billy Goldenberg has died, age 84 at his home in New York. Goldenberg was well known for his TV themes including Kojak, Rod Serling's Night Gallery and Columbo “Ransom for a Dead Man” but Steven Spielberg fans will know of his tense music associated with the 1971 car-chase classic, Duel. A composer should be sensitive to what’s happening on the screen,” Goldenberg told the L.A. Times. “It’s better to underplay and understate, even though it often becomes a personal struggle for me because I’m very emotional, always ready to pour my heart out.” The news was confirmed on social media by Goldenberg’s friends Leonard Slatkin and Gary Gerani, but no cause of death was given My dear friend Billy Goldenberg passed away this morning. His name might not be familiar, but his music is, whether the soundtrack for “Columbo,” his show with Bea Arthur or a myriad of films. He was an important voice in the music world. A kinder, ge...

How To Spot Steven Spielberg's Reflection In The Movie, Duel

Steven Spielberg Appears Briefly In Duel We all love the 1971 Steven Spielberg directed classic, Duel about a business commuter pursued and terrorized by the malevolent driver of a massive tractor-trailer across the empty deserted roads of America.  Some say Duel is a precursor to Steven Spielberg's other classic, the 1975 in-the-water thriller, Jaws.  Duel is one and a half hours of pure edge-of-your-seats entertainment and shows the early potential of Steven Spielberg even back in 1971. The TV movie, originally 74 minutes in length was made for ABC's "Movie of the Week" and Spielberg was under pressure to complete the filming of the movie in just 10 days.  He did it in 13 much to the amazement of the crew who said it couldn't be done.  Insisting on using on-location shots rather than what would have ultimately been fake-looking studio shots, Spielberg can be forgiven for the odd blooper here and there due to the pressure he was under to complete the TV mo...

Happy Birthday (encore ?) #Duel

On this date, January the 13th, in 1973 Steven Spielberg's Duel went on general release in Japan, the first country where the former tv-movie-of-the-week was to receive a regular theatrical screening (The film had been shown once in London in October 1972, but it did not go on general release at that time and place). Making it one of very few films actually being able to celebrate two birthdays. So we thought it would be time for a little celebration, A film doesn't turn 42 every day, does it ? Just to add a little on the festivities, we collected a few of the international posters,  that were used in the various countries, all over the world. And some even more colorful than others. And to top it all off, an image of the man responsible of it all, the main star of the film... And one of only two characters in the film who actually had a name: Dennis Weaver as Mr. Mann (the other one being Jaqueline Scott as Mrs. Ma...
