CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FOUR DESIGNS: INSIDE THE BFI SPIELBERG POSTERS

Dean Newman interviews designer, Kyle Robertson on his Steven Spielberg posters for the BFI. Steven Spielberg , his movies have not just changed Hollywood but shaped our lives. Throughout June and July the BFI have been spoiling us with an amazing season celebrating the films – and some television – of Steven Spielberg, covering everything from Duel (released theatrically here in Europe) to Amazing Stories and of course his summer blockbusters. Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, E.T. and the granddaddy of the modern summer blockbuster as we know it, Jaws. To accompany such a breadth of work, the BFI commissioned four pieces of work promoting the season utilizing striking and iconic imagery that is ingrained not just in film culture, but that of popular culture. Images were chosen from Jaws, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park, each riffing on a Spielberg classic that celebrates both the man and his movies. As a lifelong-Spielberg and Jaws fan, I, Dean New...

10 Iconic Movie Posters Worthy of Your Room (for Spielberg and Lucas Fans)

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are two of the most iconic and renowned filmmakers of our generation. They have collectively written, directed and produced some of the most successful movies of all time, including Star Wars, Jaws, E.T., and Jurassic Park (and more recently, Jurassic World, too). While these movies may have gone down in history as some of the best and most successful movies of all time, the movie posters used to promote them often get forgotten about. This is a shame, as with movies of this calibre, the movie posters are often just as iconic as the actual movie (or not far off, at least).   It’s important to remember that before the release of a movie, the movie poster has a hugely important job to play: it must provoke excitement, anticipation, and most importantly, a burning desire to see the movie as soon as it’s released. This is a tough job, and often, renowned artists are hired to create the artwork for said posters. Below, we’ve ro...

Drew Struzan Honoured At The Hollywood Reporter Awards.

Drew Struzan was honoured with the Saul Bass Award at The Hollywood Reporter's Key Art Awards which was held on October 23rd at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. "Drew manages to embody not only the film narrative in the poster but the actual magic of going to the movies," says Guillermo del Toro, echoing the sentiment of the scores of filmmakers who have benefited from Struzan's artistry over the years. "He encapsulates both an era and an experience." Like all true artists, Struzan knew his calling the moment he picked up a brush -- although his parents were hardly encouraging while he was growing up in Oregon and California. They gave him "no support, no understanding," he says. But he found comfort in art. And, in 1965, at the age of 18, he was accepted into Los Angeles' Art Center College of Design. "I fell into the entertainment industry because I went to school here," he says. "It didn't matter what I painted, I just...

Drew: The Man Behind The Poster Documentary Review.

Drew The Man Behind The Poster The much anticipated Drew Struzan documentary is now available to watch via Netflix, but is it worth watching? Drew: The Man Behind The Poster directed by Erik Sharkey celebrates the man that has brought us iconic movie posters over the years such as the Indiana Jones trilogy, Star Wars and Back to the Future to name a few. At 96 minutes long the documentary is packed with interviews from greats such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Michael J Fox, Frank Darabont and…Steve Guttenberg.  However the best interviews on the documentary are arguably with the artist himself who talks about his unloving home growing up and how he left to go to college where he met his very supporting wife.  It was from here he started his career.   The early days were hard as told by Struzan on the documentary, “I ate for two days and worked for five” the artist would reveal.  This allowed him to save the little money he...

Amazing Drew Struzan Style Star Wars VII Poster By Adam Schickling

We all know that Drew Struzan is on a different level when it comes to his talent as an artist. He is well and truely etched in the Star Wars annals along with such names as John Williams and Stuart Freeborn. So for anyone to try and emulate the great Drew Struzan they would have some huge task ahead of them. Artist and fan Adam Scickling has taken on that task and delivered something quite spectacular. We were lucky enough to ask Adam a few questions regarding the poster and what's involved. When you painted the poster did you actually have Drew Struzan's style in mind? If so did the task seem twice as big because of this? I love the paintings and drawings of Drew Struzan, so I would be lying if I said that his work did not influence mine. I was trying to capture the look and feeling that a Drew poster has. My hope was that I captured a fraction of that emotion and realism of what Drew can in any one of his amazing pieces of art. The task of creating the poster with tha...
