WATCH: George Lucas Predicted Games Will Look Like Movies Back In 1993

VINTAGE VIDEO: Lucasarts Promo From 1993 Featuring George Lucas Below is a Lucasarts promo video from 1993 featuring George Lucas.  The Star Wars creator who back in 1993 was the chairman of the board for Lucasarts starts his speech by saying he is in both businesses.  He then predicts that games will look just like movies: "I'm in the games business.  I've been in the games business for 15 years, I've been developing interactive, multimedia entertainment and I'm a storyteller and I make movies.  One isn't going to wipe out the other...There will be movies and there will be games and the games will look like movies."  Well, here we are 27 years later and he wasn't wrong with that prediction.  Some of the triple-A games on next-gen consoles and PC look absolutely stunning and even in the world of TV and movies, there is a cross-over already happening with The Mandalorian using Epic's Unreal engine to provide the stunning backdrops we are f...

Star Wars Behind The Magic. A Look Back At The Insider’s Guide #MayThe4thBeWithYou

A Retrospective Look At Star Wars Behind The Magic Way back In 1998 the Star Wars buzz was back mainly thanks to the imminent arrival of Episode One. The Internet screeched at 56K all around the world as fans tried to find out that little bit of information about the upcoming movie and Star Wars in general. Video clips would take an age to load and when they did they were low resolution and in a small window on your screen. The web was a wonderful place for information even back then but for the multimedia experience, CD-ROM was still the way to go to get a true audio and visual experience. Imagine my excitement when I got my hands on Lucasarts’  Star Wars Behind The Magic . Two CD-ROM’s packed with more information on Star Wars than I had ever seen before, plus on disc one was a preview of The Phantom Menace. The discs were packed with photos from the Lucasfilm archives and footage never before seen including that now famous lost “Biggs scene” from A New Hope. My fa...

VIDEO: I take a look at Star Wars: Behind the Magic CD-ROM Disc two

I take a look at disc two of Star Wars: Behind the Magic. Back in 1998 Lucasarts released a two disc interactive CD-ROM called Star Wars: Behind the Magic .  It was packed with information on Star Wars and included a tasty sneak peak of the yet to be released, The Phantom Menace. The discs came with videos, audio clips and photos some of which were never seen before. This was our source for the Force before the Internet. In the video below I take a quick look at disc two.  Let me know if you would like to see more including a video on disc one The Bearded Trio - The Site For Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, John Williams and a whole lot more.

Taking A Closer Look At The Star Wars Influence In Lucasarts' Monkey Island

Star Wars In Monkey Island In the early 90’s, Lucasfilm Games, which would eventually become Lucasarts, had, it seems the Midas touch with adventure games.  Using their unique SCUMM system, which stood for “Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion” it brought point and click games to a wider audience with classic games such as Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and Sam & Max. What made these games stand out from the crowd was their graphics, studio quality music and sound effects, their pick up and play feel and most importantly the script.  When it needed to be funny the game was genuinely laugh-out-loud funny, which was and still is rare for a video game.  The creators of the games also had the ability to make you care about the characters in the game and bring them to life with their unique style of writing. One particular game had this in abundance.  That was of course The Secret of Monkey Island released in 1990.  Designed by Ron Gilbert, with Tim S...

Tim Schafer wins the BAFTA Games Fellowship Award 2018

Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine Productions, wins the BAFTA Games Fellowship Award at the BAFTA Games Awards 2018. Ex-Lucasarts genius, Tim Schafer  accepted the BAFTA Games Fellowship Award on Thursday in London.  Tim brought us classics such as Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle to name a few.  Schafer said: “It’s kind of bewildering,” he says modestly, “because there’s nothing quite like this in America. It’s not like just being awarded with something, more like being welcomed into something. I enjoy that feeling.” Tim Schafer founded Double Find Productions which has brought us fine games such as The Cave and Broken Age. On the night, Giant Sparrow's What Remains of Edith Finch was crowned Best Game while Hell Blade picked up five awards.  List of winners are: Best Game: What Remains of Edith Finch Original Property: Horizon Zero Dawn Music: Cuphead Game Design: Super Mario Odyssey Evolving Game: Overwatch Narrative: Ni...

Ready Player One Music Video, Lucasarts Style

Ready Player One Music Video With Plenty Of Lucasarts Gunship have released a new video and it tells the story of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One in five minutes.  What makes it extra special is that the whole video is done in the style of a classic point and click adventure game, in particular a Lucasarts SCUMM™   adventure.  This has become one of my favourite music videos of all time.  The song that accompanies is perfect and has a sense of Ready Player One intrigue about it. Seriously though, how good would a Ready Player One adventure game be?  I could think of two ways this could be done.  The first would be in classic style, so keeping the retro theme just like in the music video.  Tim Schafer are you listening?  The second way would be an episodic adventure in the style of TellTale Games.  After all, you can do anything and be anyone in The Oasis so why not have each episode with a different character, story and scenario? ...

From Bedrooms to Billions: The Amiga Years! Review

'From Bedrooms to Billions: The Amiga Years!' is a feature film documentary that takes you on a detailed, and I mean detailed journey through the development, and life of the Commodore Amiga. If you grew up in the 80's and 90's then you will know how cool the Amiga was.  I remember the first time I powered up my Commodore Amiga 500 and dropped 'Shadow of the Beast' into the disk drive.  I was blown away by the graphics, sound and music.  Especially as my previous computer was a trusty ZX Spectrum and that's how it was for millions of computer users in the late 80's.  Going from a Speccy or C64 to this leviathan, this monster of a machine was mind blowing. The Amiga introduced me, for the first time to classic games such as the mighty absorbing Lucasarts titles.  The Secret of Monkey Island and Indiana Jones were just a few games that were new to me and it was the Amiga that allowed me to experience the talents of Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer for...

Ex-Lucasarts Employee Chris Baker Talks To Ministry of Cinema About The History Of Star Wars Games

An ex-Lucasarts employee talks to Ministry of Cinema about the history of Star Wars video games. Star Wars is probably the world’s premiere intellectual property. The world of George Lucas has taken over movies, comics, books, theme parks, conventions, and maybe most of all, video games. So much of the Star Wars culture overlaps with that of the video game culture. In this episode, we have a conversation with Chris Baker about the history of Star Wars video games, and how the galaxy far, far away has changed the industry. A year ago, documentary film The Prequels Strike Back challenged viewers with new and interesting perspectives on George Lucas and his controversial prequel trilogy.  Now, indie studio Ministry of Cinema is at it again with The Prequels Strike Back...Strikes Back!
