Movie Review: "The Founder" Serves up a Compelling Story with Side Order of Great Acting

THE FOUNDER Starring Michael Keaton, Laura Dern, Nick Offerman, John Carrol Lynch,  Linda Cardellini,  Patrick Wilson and B.J. Novak Written by Robert D. Siegel Directed by John Lee Hancock Reviewed by Patrick Gibbs   Out of Four When I was a pre-teen, I remember attending a party where a friend told the following story: "So, did you know that McDonald's was started by two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, and that the Big Mac was originally going to be called The Big Dick? Isn't that funny?!" My brother, ever the trivia king, questioned this: "That can't be true," he stated. "McDonalds was started by Ray Kroc." This was before the internet, so there was no immediate way to settle this, but we'd seen the signs telling of Ray Kroc's ingenuity at many a McDonalds location, though we wondered from that day on where the McDonalds name actually came from. Well, it turns out that, of course, the Big Dick is indeed an urban l...

Movie Review: "Patriot's Day" is a Fast Paced Thriller That Can't Get its Story Straight

PATRIOTS DAY Starring Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, J.K. Simmons, Michelle Monaghan Screenplay by Peter Berg and Matt Cook and Joshua Zetumer Directed by Peter Berg Reviewed by Patrick Gibbs   Out of Four When viewing a film that is "based on a true story", it's often important to remember those two words: "Based on." The most painstaking, authentic and slavishly accurate depictions of chapters from true life are still subject to dramatization. A good example would be Schindler's List , arguably the greatest historical drama in cinematic history; powerful, important, unflinchingly real, and taken from real life accounts of the people who were there. Nevertheless, it has to be admitted in the interest of truth that Ben Kingsley's Itzhak Stern was in reality a composite of the real Stern and several other Jews who worked with Schindler, and that Oskar Schindler's womanizing didn't end when he committed to his glorious act of...

A Track by Track Review Of La La Land Record's Expanded Score of Jurassic Park: The Lost World

David Gawne continues his in-depth look at the expanded Jurassic Park soundtrack released by La La Land Records.  This week we get a track by track review of Jurassic Park: The Lost World.  If you missed last week's review of the original Jurassic Park review you can catch up by following this link. A s great as it was to hear the expanded Jurassic Park score on the La La Land Records CD set, it was Jurassic Park: The Lost World I was really looking forward to. I remember buying the original soundtrack in '97 with that amazing 3D packaging which over the years has become a bit battered and bruised. The great thing about John Williams when he scores a sequel is his refusal to rely on what has come before. Think of The Temple of Doom, now compare it to Raiders, or Empire Strikes Back compared to Star Wars. His sequel scores are always darker, more complex and deeper, while also keeping what made the original so amazing. The Lost World is no exception. We get many new t...

We Interview Henry J. Thomas Jr About Comedy Series, Grip and Electric

Working on a film set evokes scenes of glamour and groups of people at the height of their talents.  Yet in reality that is not always the case.  Grip and Electric is a comedy series on Youtube which shows the other side of working behind the scenes on a film set.  It was co-produced and stars Henry J. Thomas Jr who of course played Elliott in Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. Grip and Electric follows a down-on-their-luck, low budget film crew who carry things and plug things in on the least professional film sets in Los Angeles.  With a touch of 'The Office' and Ricky Gervais's 'Extras' thrown in, it won't fail to make you smile.  We caught up with Henry J. Thomas Jr and asked him a few questions about the show. How would you describe Grip and Electric?   I would describe it as a slog through the comically unglamorous world of working on clandestine stupidly low budgeted projects in and around LA. How much fun did you have filming th...

Cotswold Website Redesigns Castle Interior. Includes Death Star Cinema Room

Serial entrepreneur Chris Morling has re-invested £3 million to create the ultimate workspace for his team as part of his mission to make Cirencester-based independent comparison website  money.co.uk  the best place to work in the South West. The Victorian castle, which is headquarters for his growing team of 50, now offers a range of on-site luxuries such as a Star Wars-themed cinema complete with popcorn machine.
