Under the Dome has been a collaborative effort between author Stephen King (the series is loosely based on his novel of the same name) and Spielberg, with both acting as executive producers. Extant star Halle Berry shares co-executive producing credit with Spielberg on that series.
During its second season, Under the Dome averaged 11 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic, while Extant averaged 8.64 million. Ratings were up for the Extant season finale, so that probably helped its chances for renewal.
CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler had this to say about the decision:
“We’re committed to delivering our viewers and advertisers year-round programming with a wide variety of storytelling. We continue to see summer as a great place for unique concepts, innovative business models, and passionate television audiences.”
Both shows will return next summer.
