Greg Boas is our guest this week. Greg is a filmmaker, television editor, and composer. As Supervising Editor, Co-Producer and Co-Cinematographer of "Drew, The man Behind the Poster," he is currently enjoying the film's theatrical run and looking forward to its DVD release this Fall.
You're stuck in a swamp on Dagobah. What one movie, TV show, album and book would you take?
Movie: This is Spinal Tap
TV Show: I should probably take the opportunity to see why so many fans love Breaking Bad, but if this is a long stay I’d like to have all seasons of Small Wonder with me.
Album: Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention: One Size Fits All
Book: Some sort of Light Saber / Jedi training manual.
If you could invite any three people (alive or not, fictitious or not) to a dinner party, who would they be?
If we're talking about a fun, get-to-know-you, laughs & good food kind of dinner party, I'd invite Paul Rubens, Christopher Guest and Perry Farrell, but if we're talking about something more intimate & romantic I'd like Nick Frost, Louis Lombardi and Greg Grunberg to be there, fighting for my attention.
What is your favourite John Williams soundtrack?
There's nothing quite like listening to the main title theme of Superman blasting from my turntables into the neighborhood as the very first runners of the New York City Marathon pass my house.
If you were invisible for a day what would be the first thing you would do?
I'd most likely be a nudist, for a day.
When was the last time you cried?
It was last week some time. I was on a train to work listening to "Long Time" by The Roots and imagining a scene from "The Revenge of Disco Joe," a movie I'm developing based on a character created by Erik P. Sharkey. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by thoughts of the art I want to make. When they're really good, I can get lost imagining what it’d be like to be in the audience experiencing a scene or a song I’ve written for the first time and that can bring a tear to my eye, not because it’s sad or anything, but because it’s so good. I tear up over really great live music too, again not because the songs are sad, but because they’re written and performed so well and with so much passion. It was sort of a “tears of joy” moment. I have them often when I have enough time in a day to daydream and think about what I really want to do. Then I have to hop off the train and get to work as if I'm not a lunatic.
What is your biggest fear?
I don’t have any fears.
What was the most embarrassing moment of your life?
It’s tough to embarrass me. I’m a funny guy with a positive self-image and self-deprecating sense of humor. I can pretty much turn any situation that might seem embarrassing to most into a joke and own it. One time I got pants'd at an outdoor bar while I was hanging with some coworkers I didn't know very well. I remember standing there and continuing the conversation as if nothing had happened, while my coworkers went on to berate the guys who did it to me.
Excluding search engines, what three websites would you choose if no other websites were available?
This is going to sound lame, but I pretty much spend most of my web time on Facebook. I like seeing what's going on around the net in my newsfeed and I love how easy it is to re-post info of interest from other blogs, youtube, etc. It's sort of a hub of the internet for me, but I guess if only three websites existed in the world, and Facebook was just a log of the salads my friends are eating for lunch, I'd have to scrap it. I'll say eBay, YouTube and www.bhphotovideo.com
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
I find humor in very poorly executed entertainment. I laugh really hard at bad movies, awful albums, and just lousy art in general. Having had the opportunity to study film in a world-renowned Art academy, it’s completely aloof of me to do this, so I pretty much keep it to myself and a few close friends who share this pleasure with me.
What are you looking forward to the most in the next six months?
I’m really looking forward to having some time back in my life to be creative and work on new
projects. For the past eight years I’ve been working hard with director Erik Sharkey on two films: “Sexina, Pop Star P.I.” and “Drew: The Man behind the Poster,” while also juggling a career editing television in NYC. It’ll be nice for the first time in that many years to have my personal time to myself. I’m chomping at the bit to finish and develop scripts I’ve had on the back burner. I also have a wall of records, a sampling drum machine and a drum kit that I’d like to dust off and put to good use again.
What is your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession is my Ludwig Drum Kit, the best $60 I ever spent! It currently resides in a closet, but that’s about to change.
What is your biggest regret?
I have a strictly “No Regrets” policy about life. I live by the mantra set forth by Gibby Haynes of The Butthole Surfers, “It’s better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven’t done.” I take a lot of risks in life and in my career, and I have no regrets about any of them. It’s easy once in a while to think back to forks in the road and wonder how my life could be different had I made other choices in crucial moments, or had I recognized how crucial certain moments in my life were when I was making decisions, but I’m happy with the way things have turned out so far and I don’t look back at anything with regret.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the good people in my life and the friendships I’ve developed over the years. I’m blessed to have great relationships with my wonderful family, and I’m happy to spread that love that we share to others. It feels good to be surrounded by people who love me and care about me, and I’m proud of myself for living my life in a way that makes that so.
What is your favourite Spielberg movie?
Saving Private Ryan
