Hook(ed) on John Williams

When I was a kid and through to my 20s, my dad was a huge fan of classical music, in fact he had utter disdain for any other kind of music; calling it junk. His collection of classical music was pretty substantial, ranging from popular composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, Bach, and Strauss; Mozart being his favorite. Being a kid, and my father’s son, I couldn’t help but be a little impressionable, as I also became a fan of classical music. When my father passed away in 2006 I inherited his collection of cd’s and still listen to them to this day. Two cd’s of his in particular hold a special place for me. Them being, By Request…The Best of John Williams released in 1983, and John Williams The Boston Pops: Out of This World released 1987. I distinctly remember listening to these two cd’s over and over again. Probably because I was, and still am, such a huge Star Wars fan and it was the only way to hear the music of my favorite movie, because we didn’t own a copy of the films at...

Movie Review: Bryan Cranston Battles the Blacklist in "Trumbo"

Starring Bryan Cranston, Louis CK, Elle Fanning, Diane Lane, Michael Sthulbarg, Alan Tudyk, Dean O' Gorman Directed by Jay Roach  Rated R (profanity, vulgarity)  From 1947 to 1960, Dalton Trumbo was one of a long list of Hollywood talents who was banned from working in the film industry because of their connections (or alleged connections) to the Communist Party of America. During this time, Trumbo continued to write under the table, using aliases (and winning two Academy Awards without his name on them). Bryan Cranston, the Emmy-Winning star of Breaking Bad, now brings Trumbo to life in a new biopic from director Jay Roach ( Austin Powers ). As the film begins, Trumbo and his cohorts are just beginning to really worry about the effect Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee are having on Hollywood, aided by zealous Hollywood anti-Communist crusaders like John Wayne (David James Elliott) and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (the alway...

Movie Review: Pixar Disappoints with "The Good Dinosaur", Which Just Isn't Very Good

THE GOOD DINOSAUR Starring the voices of Raymond Ochoa, Jack Bright, Sam Elliott, Steve Zahn, Anna Paquin, Jeffrey Wright Screenplay by Meg LeFauve Directed by Peter Sohn   Reviewed by Patrick Gibbs Out of Four 20 years ago last week, the face of animation was changed forever when Disney-PIXAR gave us their debut film, Toy Story.   Initially viewed as a gimmick or a novelty, this instant classic arguably impacted not only animation but film as a whole more than any other movie of the past two decades. After producing multiple classics, the ground breaking company turned mega empire seemed to be running out of ideas, until this summer's Inside Out was praised (and rightly so) as a strong contender for the studio's best film to date. After riding so high these past few months, some cynics have been skeptical that lightning could strike twice with the group releasing two major movies in one year, and some seriously doubted that The Good Dinosaur, a...

In the Heart of the Sea – Official Featurette From Warner Bros. Uk

Directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA opens nationwide across the UK on 26th December. The Bearded Trio are pleased to bring you a new featurette from Warner Bros. UK. Synopsis Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex. In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.  The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.  But that told only half the story.  “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive.  Braving storms, starvation, panic an...

Movie Review: Stallone Packs as Big a Punch as Ever in "Creed"

CREED  Starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tess Thompson, Graham McTavish Screenplay by Ryan Coogler & Aaron Covington based on characters created by Sylvester Stallone Directed by Ryan Coogler Rated PG-13 (profanity, boxing violence, adult themes) It's easy to forget just how good the original 1976 Rocky was, and how good Sylvester Stallone was in it. While for our money the 2006 Rocky Balboa was a glorious return to form, earlier sequels (in particular the high-grossing Rocky IV ) took the franchise in such a cartoony direction that the sheer emotional power of the original was forgotten. Considering that  Rocky Balboa succeeded in ending the series with class and dignity, Stallone was taking a big risk by not only bringing the Italian Stallion back for one more round, but for the first time letting someone else write the screenplay. But Sly's trust in Ryan Coogler was well-placed. Creed is a big success. The story is such a strong ...

*SPOILERS* for the Doctor Who episode "Face the Raven." It was announced several weeks ago that Jenna Coleman was ending her run on Doctor Who , and in last Saturday's episode, "Face the Raven," we bid an emotional farewell to Clara Oswald. Here are a few behind-the-scenes highlights from this episode: You were brave, Clara.... Truly. Book Review -- Dark Side of the Mind: Star Wars Psychology

Dark Side of the Mind: Star Wars Psychology is a collection of essays, edited by Travis Langley, that seek to explore the motivations behind the iconic characters of the Star Wars Saga. It also looks at why we are drawn to those characters and what that could possibly say about us. The essays presented are written by those qualified to make such analyses, whether because of their professional credentials, or their deep connection to all things Star Wars . It’s very much ‘by the fans, for the fans.’ The book itself is divided into five major sections: Tales, Kinds, Journeys, Paths, and Awakenings. Each section is then broken down into examinations of the major theme. For example, the essays that fall under “Paths” include “Explaining the Empire: Why Good People Do Bad Things” and “Lando’s Choice: Anatomy of a Moral Dilemma.” They look at the paths chosen by certain characters (or entities, in the case of the Empire), and the consequences of those choices. I foun...
