SOUNDTRACK NEWS: INTRADA Announces George Bruns' JOHNNY TREMAIN

JOHNNY TREMAINMusic by GEORGE BRUNS
INTRADA ISC 425

Intrada's latest release from the vast Walt Disney catalog stretches back to 1957, with George Bruns' music for Johnny Tremain. Bruns is best remembered for his scores to 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, and his adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty. With the release of Johnny Tremain, Intrada brings focus to his scoring for live-action films. Unlike the current and often non-thematic nature of today's film music, Walt Disney loved prominent melody. To that end, Bruns ensured that the Tremain score was built around two main themes. One theme is for Tremain himself — a four-note motif constructed around the syllables of the character’s name, often played in emotional, legato strings. But hero of the story or not, the centerpiece of the score is the second theme — a rousing march entitled "Liberty Tree."

An album had been released contemporaneously with the film, featuring a re-recorded 20-minute suite of …

10 Years Of The Bearded Trio: Robert MacNaughton Answers Our Quick Fire Questions

10 Years Of The Bearded Trio - Robert MacNaughton Answers Our Quick Fire Questions The Bearded Trio is 10 years old this year so we've become a little nostalgic and decided to post some of our favourite posts from over the years.  To kick us off we have our short interview with E.T. The Extra Terrestrial's, Robert MacNaughton (Elliott's older brother, Michael.)  He kindly answered our "quick fire questions."  This was a feature we ran regularly with questions that kind of replicated the quick fire round that James Lipton would ask his guests on "Inside The Actor's Studio."

I met Robert at London Film & Comic Con in 2013 and he kindly agreed to answer my questions.  I said to not think about them too much and tell me the first thing that comes to mind, hence the short answers.  Here we go:

You're stuck in a swamp on Dagobah. What one movie, TV show, album and book would you take?
MY movie would be The Fighter and TV show - Survivor (So I coul…

INTRADA Announces James Horner's AN AMERICAN TAIL

AN AMERICAN TAIL
Music Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
Performed by the LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
INTRADA ISC 423 Intrada continues its examination of the animated scores of James Horner with this new expanded edition of the 1986 soundtrack to An American Tail, a joint effort between Don Bluth's Sullivan Bluth Studios and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, and Horner's first full-length animation effort. The score follows Horner's soon-to-be-Oscar-nominated score for Aliens. Whereas Aliens was a dark, mysterious, exciting and often scary work, An American Tail was a mouse of an entirely different color. Tail spanned two animated continents, giving Horner an epic tapestry for which he weaved a colorful and beautiful score, steeped in rich themes and excitement. Throughout, songs help the story along, spawning the hit, "Somewhere Out There," sung by Linda Ronstadt and the very recently, dearly departed James Ingram. It's one of the finest scores …

Movie Review: "High Flying Bird" Has A Lot of Heart But Lacks Game

HIGH FLYING BIRD
Starring André Holland, Zazie Beetz, Melvin Gregg, Sonja Sohn, Zachary Quinto, Kyle MacLachlan and Bill Duke
Screenplay by Tarrell Alvin McCraney
Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Out of Four

Reviewed by Patrick Gibbs

Despite a brief period of supposed retirement from features from 2013 to 2017, Steven Soderbergh is the only Oscar Winning director whose output threatens to rival Woody Allen and Clint Eastwood. As an artist, he's like a basketball player who takes the shot every time he gets possession of the ball: occasionally, he scores big (Traffic, Erin Brockavich, Ocean's 11, Logan Lucky). But in between every shot he sinks,, there are a lot of shots that just bounce off the backboard, if they even come that close. Unfortunately, his latest effort High Flying Bird, is hardly a slam dunk.

Set during a pro basketball lockout, High Flying Bird follows sports agent Ray Burke (André Holland) as he finds himself caught in the face-off between the NBA and the players. Ray …
