One break from tradition in Steven Spielberg's eagerly awaited Ready Player One is that the musical score is not composed by his longtime collaborator, legendary composer John Williams. Since the 86-years old Williams was busy with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Spielberg's The Post, Alan Silvestri (favorite composer of Spielberg associate Robert Zemeckis) has stepped in. This is the second time in recent years Spielberg has worked with a different composer, following Thomas Newman's Oscar nominated score for Bridge of Spies.
Silvestri's main title theme can now be heard here, and fans won't be disappointed. Like Newman's work on Bridge of Spies it has a fascinating quality of sounding distinctly like this composer's work, but with a touch of John Williams and, more importantly, every bit like the score to a Spielberg film. I can't wait to hear the rest of it. This is going to be an amazing year for Silvestri, between this score and his upcoming scores for Avengers: Infinity War and Robert Zemeckis' The Women of Marwen.
