The computer graphics for the first Star Wars film was created by Larry Cuba in the 1970's at the Electronic Visualisation Laboratory (EVL.)  At the time it was known as the Circle Graphics Habitat at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  In this detailed video he explains how one of the first instances of computers graphics in a movie was made for Star Wars: A New Hope.  Advanced tech for 1977.
