Hera and Kanan: 'Space Married': Star Wars Rebels |
Since 1977 Lucasfilm has been bringing new dynamics to the forefront of character relationships and their unyielding ability to strike-up contagious chemistry on screen. Not just between comrades in arms, but brotherly-love too, and beyond the realms of everlasting friendships – romantic banter and love. Star Wars isn’t all laser-swords and blasters, it’s about the heavy too, and I don’t mean the artillery.
The Power Couple:
The original trilogy gave us Han and Leia; a pairing that definitely went against all odds and yeah, I know, never tell Han the odds. These two represented the old phrase, “opposites attract” and did they ever! Like magnets and in time, even Leia submissively gave in and caved to Han’s much needed kiss.
These two on screen were electric and were noted as Star Wars “Power Couple.” Let’s face it, who didn’t want that “I love you. I know.” relationship?
Fast forward to the prequel era and George Lucas gave us another romance [Anakin and Padme], one that would light up the stars and tug at our heartstrings like Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Two star crossed lovers, destined for heartache, but yet, we invested our emotions in their story and watched as these lost stars withered and faded, until love’s last light … burnt out.
Space Married:
And then, it happened. In October of 2014, Lucasfilm and Disney gave us Star Wars Rebels! A new era of the galaxy far, far away to explore – set approximately fifteen years after Revenge of Sith and five years before A New Hope, this uncharted timeline opened new diversified doors for the Star Wars saga. And they kicked-it-off with a motley cast known as the Ghost Crew – led by their Twi’lek pilot, Hera Syndulla and her partner, an undercover Jedi known as Kanan Jarrus, who were separately introduced in A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller. This novel told their tale on how they came to be Spectre 1 and Spectre 2 and eventually, formed a crew to fight against the growing Empire.
“How about a little less attitude and a little more altitude?”- Kanan Jarrus
Somewhere between the novel of A New Dawn and the beginning of Star Wars Rebels, Hera and Kanan became more than just the Ghost Crew’s leaders, in the budding Rebellion against the Empire and along the way, they fell in love.
“What’s the matter, luv? You miss me?”
“Always … and more than you’ll ever know.”- Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus
Hera and Kanan: "There's a lot you don't know about my ship." |
So what’s so uniquely special about these two? What do they have that their predecessors didn’t? That’s easy. They have a real-worldly, relatable relationship that fits-in with today’s world or society. The obvious, is on the exterior. In other words, Hera is a Twi’lek and Kanan is a human, therefore they are an intergalactic couple – at least I hope that’s politically correct? Moving along … their banter and innuendo word play, is remarkably on point and truth be told, straight-up contemporary by today’s standards.
“There’s a lot you don’t know about my ship.”- Hera Syndulla
To put it lightly, this animated couple delivers in a lot more ways than what we got on the big screen, and we probably know more about them then we should, that is, if you pay attention to the details.
In retrospect, Hera and Kanan are the modern day romance of the galaxy far, far away and from my point of view, a great model couple for this generation of Star Wars fans.
“If all you do is fight for your own life, then your life is worth nothing!”-Hera Syndulla
