Steven Spielberg was the keynote speaker at the United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony this year.
The Oscar winning director, writer and producer gave his speech on the International Day of Commemoration in New York on Jan. 27.
In his speech, Spielberg said: “Genocide is an evil. But, the greatest evil is when people who have been spared the horrors commit themselves to despair. We know despair and remembering are a choice. But we need to confront and act on what we learned.”
Spielberg was an apt speaker at the conference: after releasing his Holocaust film, Schindler’s List, in 1993, he founded the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation — The Institute for Visual History and Education. He founded the institution to collect and preserve testimonies of survivors and other witnesses to the Holocaust.
