A lot has changed since Steven Spielberg started his moviemaking career so many years ago. With computers (and their talented programmers) now able to create almost any kind of special effect imaginable, it's easy to overlook how ground-breaking some of Spielberg's pre-CGI films were. The beginning of the end starts MONDAY, FEB. 19 (9:00 p.m. EST) when the critically-acclaimed animated series "Star Wars Rebels" returns to Disney XD with new episodes as the series nears its grand finale.  The final episodes will unfold over three weeks, with two back-to-back episodes premiering every Monday night on Disney XD, until its epic 90-minute conclusion on MONDAY, MARCH 5 (8:30 p.m. EST). I've recently read the superb Ready Player One from Ernest Cline and I have to say it is one of the most thrilling books I've had the pleasure of reading in years.  The story throws a lot of 80's and gaming references throughout and this was perfect for me.  I'm a huge fan of the 80's as this was my teenage years so I look back at that decade with fondness.  I'm also an avid gamer and have been since the days of Space Invaders, so many of the gaming references I connected with and brought a retro-inducing smile to my face. As a result of reading this epic story my expectations for the Steven Spielberg movie which is set to hit cinema screens in March are higher than any movie release in years.  I must admit I am intrigued how they are going to do some scenes as some of the challenges and scenarios in the book centre around a particular movie or video game. Steven Spielberg as you probably already know is a bit of a gamer and it was only natural when the director was doing one of his regular visits to Lucasfilm in the early 80's that he set his sites on the Star Wars arcade machine that just happened to be taking residence. Little did Spielberg know that the machine was being used and studied by Peter Langston (Ball Blazer and Rescue on Fractalus!) who was there for Lucasfilm Games (later to be Lucasarts.)   Lucasfilm actually had little involvement in the Atari arcade machine but the machine was shipped  to Lucasfilm for reference and for Langston to study.  After studying the manual he discovered a switch that would convert the game into debug mode and allow all sorts of options to be applied.  One in particular was the option to freeze the game and using the fire button you could advance the scene one frame at a time and still move the cursor on screen and blast away those Tie-fighters and other enemies...

Following the success of 2017’s The Post , starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, he is donning both his director and producer hats for a fresh release entitled Ready Player One. The narrative, originally a successful novel, revolves around OASIS, a virtual world that the people of the not-so-distant future spend all their time in. The film, slated for a March 2018 release, will bring the concept of a virtual world to our very physical one. Spielberg is often tasked with bringing the future to the present and Ready Player One promises to do just that.   The owner of OASIS dies and bequeaths the world to whoever can solve the many games and puzzles he has laid out. Antonios Papantoniou contacted us to let us know about his latest 'shot by shot' video.  This time he takes us through The Desert Chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark.  If you're not familiar with his videos, Antonios analyzes the camera angles, types of shots, number of cuts and duration of shots used for the scene in question.  It really is fascinating to watch and a perfect video for a cinephile.
