Good Night Oppy Is A Masterclass In Documentary And Storytelling

Good Night Oppy Is A Must-See Isn't it nice when you come across a movie that you somehow missed the boat on and then when you watch it you wonder how you missed something so incredibly amazing?  Well, that's exactly what happened with me and Good Night Oppy.   I'm trying to figure out how I missed this amazing docu-movie from Amazon Studios which tells the story of Opportunity, nicknamed Oppy, a Mars rover launched in 2003 that was supposed to last 90 sols (Mars days) and ended up plodding along the Martian surface for 15 years!  The other mystery of how I missed this is two of the production companies that brought us this masterpiece are Amblin and Industrial Light & Magic no less. The production quality is simply first-rate throughout its 105 minute runtime.  The movie is a mix of documentary and a gripping Martian movie so we get to hear from the actual clever people who achieved this amazing feat of putting not only Oppy on Mars but another rover too, Spir...

Taking A Look At Industrial Light & Magic Presents: Solo: A Star Wars Story

Industrial Light & Magic Presents: Solo: A Star Wars Story I was lucky enough to get my hands on this gem of a book published by Abrams ,  It's called Industrial Light & Magic Presents: Solo: A Star Wars Story and I have to say it is easily as good as the other "behind the scenes" Star Wars books that you may have in your collection such as the ones by Jonathan W. Rinzler. The book is written by ILM guru, Rob Bredow who was the visual effects supervisor for the movie and in fact was nominated for an Academy Award for Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2019.  It goes without saying that Bredow is most definitely one of the most qualified to write a detailed book on the work that goes into bringing a Star Wars story to life and in particular the wonderful visual effects. The book really does feel like a fly-on-the-wall documentary and boasts a logical layout throughout its 256 pages.  From pre-production to production and finally the post-production, we get to see ...

Rob Bredow Gets New Role At ILM Rob Bredow has a new position at Industrial Light & Magic, the role is Senior Vice President, Executive Creative Director and Head of ILM. The announcement was made on Wednesday. Bredow joined Industrial Light & Magic back in 2014 as a Visual Effects supervisor and did such a good job that it wasn't long before he was promoted to Vice President of new media and head of Lucasfilm’s advanced development group. He's currently getting his hands dirty as VFX supervisor on Solo: A Star Wars Story which saw its world premiere last night in Hollywood. What does this mean for ILM?  Well, Bredow will now be in charge of the four studios which is located in Singapore, San Francisco, London and Vancouver.  His boss will be Lynwen Brennan Kathleen Kennedy had this to say about Rob Bredow: “I’ve been working very closely with Rob over the past two years on Solo...I have witnessed his leadership skills and creative abilities first-hand and ...

'The Kid Who Loved Indiana Jones' Youtube Series Will Make You Smile

I was browsing YouTube the other day and came across this gem from the talented Minimum Wage Entertainment channel .  It's a series called 'The Kid Who Loved Indiana Jones' and there's 12 episodes in total and each one lasts about a minute with the longest one being just over two minutes.  It is obviously made by Indiana Jones fans and will take you back to when you played Indy as a kid.  It's perfect viewing during your lunch break.  I particularly like the use of the authentic sound effects.  The creators tell us: From creators Erin Gould (Casters) and Greg Tulonen (Ragged Isle) comes a web series for kids and for those that remember what it was like to be a kid.  A show that has been called “A Sunday comic strip brought to life!” (Erin’s mom) and “Calvin & Hobbes meets Indiana Jones” (Greg, one of the co-creators), it’s THE KID WHO LOVED INDIANA JONES. If you have a web series or you know one we should feature then get in touch and we're ...

Ghostbusters Trailer In The Style Of A Decent Horror Movie

Ghostbusters is a huge favourite of mine.  It's one of my favourite comedies.  1984 was a golden year for movies.  Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Karate Kid and Police Academy to name a few were released that year. Horror movies were in abundance too.  Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Gremlins and Stephen King's Firestarter were all out with one aim in common, to give me nightmares.  Thank goodness for Ghostbusters to relieve the horror with some comedy.  But wait!  What's this?  Some clever (sick) person has re-imaged a Ghostbusters trailer in the style of a horror movie and...it looks really scary.  I would watch it.  Of course I would.  Also I love the VHS quality, nice touch Rob "What about the Twinkie?" Hybride is proud to have collaborated with ILM on “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”

Hybride is extremely proud to have contributed its VFX expertise to Luc Besson’s epic fiction action-adventure , Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets .  Joining forces once again with the team at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the studio delivered 300 shots—for a total of 17 minutes of screen time—for one of the biggest cinematic events of the summer.  Working closely with  ILM visual effects supervisor Philippe Rebours, Hybride artists skillfully crafted VFX for the opening Big Market sequence on the desert world of Kirian. Based on the look development created by ILM’s art department, Hybride artists produced assets that include highly detailed slanted rock formations and mushroom shaped rocks for Kirian’s colorful and unique geology that can be seen outside of the arena market, as well as at the main gate and tower.  Hybride also produced massive desert set extensions and populated the desert arena with nearly 12,500 digi doubles based ...

The Visual Effects of Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan and ILM's Magic

I Came across this gem of a video showing how the special effects were created for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .  There are a bunch of interviews with staff from Industrial Light and Magic and how they came on board straight from working on  Return of the Jedi .  There aim was to bring the special effects to life but have a balance that would still look part of the Trek universe created in the sixties TV series. An interesting part is how they explained that a test screening for the movie was given and instead of incomplete visual effects or animanics they would just insert the storyboard where a visual effect was to be shot.  They said it worked better and the audience totally got it. The epic nebular shots from the movie especially during the main battle at the end are all explained and how they used salt to give the illusion and how the Reliant model was made smaller than the Enterprise to make it easier to move around. It's a really informative vide...
