If you're a fan of Steven Spielberg then you will know how talented Melissa Mathison was having written E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and returning three decades later to write the script for Spielberg's latest, The BFG.  Steven Spielberg pays tribute to the talented writer: “Even though I only really worked with Melissa couple of times, mainly on ‘E.T.’, to bookend our relationship with two stories deeply from the heart of mostly Mathison, you know… ‘E.T.’ might have been my story, but the depth of that story and the way that story was told, came from Melissa’s heart as did ‘The BFG’.” Melissa Mathison died 4 November 2015 following a battle with cancer. In 1982, Steven Spielberg's E.T The Extra Terrestrial was released.  It captured so many imaginations and made children and adults alike look up and wonder if anyone is out there.  Going against the grain with alien visitation movies, Spielberg once again made the visitors friendly as he did with the 1977 classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  The alien in the movie who we came to love and care about became stranded on our planet so befriends a child (Elliot) who helps him return home. Really sad news revealed today as we find out that  Melissa Mathison, who was Oscar-nominated for original screenplay for Spielberg’s “E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial” and also wrote “The Black Stallion,” died Wednesday in Los Angeles after an illness, her brother Dirk Mathison confirmed. She was 65. She recently reunited with Spielberg to write the screenplay for Roald Dahl adaptation “The BFG,” which is in post-production. Mathison, who was married to Harrison Ford from 1983 to 2004, had two children with the actor, Malcolm and Georgia. Mathison also served as associate producer on “E.T.,” which was produced by Kathleen Kennedy. Spielberg, who worked closely with Mathison on the concept for the film, described her input on a DVD special edition, “Melissa delivered this 107-page first draft to me and I read it in about an hour. I was just knocked out. It was a script I was willing to shoot the next day. It was so honest, and Melissa’s voice made a direct connection with my he...

We can all agree that one of the best Steven Spielberg movies is the 1982 classic, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.  A lot of that success is thanks to the masterful screenplay written by Melissa Mathison who was nominated for an Oscar for her work.  Here are a few photos of the writer on set of E.T. including a scene where she played a nurse in the movie, ultimately deleted from the final version.
