Lincoln star, Daniel Day-Lewis has been made a knight in the Queen's Birthday Honours.  The actor who stared in the title role of the Steven Spielberg directed movie is among other stars who were also honoured. Damian Lewis of Band of Brothers and Harry Potter's Dame Maggie Smith were also amongst those honoured. The BBC tell us: Triple Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis has been made a knight in the Queen's Birthday Honours. The Lincoln star joins Wolf Hall novelist Hilary Mantel and fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, who are both made dames. Dame Maggie Smith becomes a Companion of Honour. The actress joins 65 individuals recognised for "services of national importance". American actress Angelina Jolie is being awarded an honorary damehood.  Daniel Day-Lewis said he was "entirely amazed and utterly delighted in equal measure" to receive the honour. Approximately 700 guests gathered for a dinner event at the Hilton last week to see Steven Spielberg receive the Lincoln Leadership Prize. The accolade recognizes individuals who exemplify the spirit of the 16th president. Fittingly, Sally Field—an Academy Award winner and star of the Spielberg-directed film, Lincoln—presented the iconic director with his award. We reported last month that Steven Spielberg will be receiving the 2014 Lincoln Leadership Prize in Chicago next week. The award will be presented by Lincoln actress Sally Field. Field, picked up an Oscar last year for her role in the Spielberg directed movie for her potrayal as Mary Todd Lincoln. The annual award honors outstanding individuals for a lifetime of service in the spirit of our 16thpresident. In a statement, the foundation’s chairman Wayne W. Whalen said Spielberg was especially worthy of this honor for being one “who brings socially relevant issues to the forefront of our minds through the medium of film. Sad news. Christopher Evan Welch , who appeared on stage in numerous plays, in films including Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” and “Lincoln,” as well as on television, died early Monday at a Los Angeles hospital, his agency Paradigm confirmed. He is believed to have been 48. Daniel Day-Lewis accepts his Oscar for best actor in Lincoln Daniel Day-Lewis picked up the Oscar in the best actor category at this years ceremony for his powerful performance in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. This makes him the first man to with best actor three times. You can watch his acceptance speech below. In it he thanks of course Steven Spielberg but also Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy who is in the audience. He first joked that he was Spielberg's second choice to play Lincoln, the first being Meryl Streep who was on stage presenting the award. However he mentions he was first considered to play Margaret Thatcher which ultimately was played by Meryl Streep herself.
