Good Night Oppy Is A Must-See Isn't it nice when you come across a movie that you somehow missed the boat on and then when you watch it you wonder how you missed something so incredibly amazing?  Well, that's exactly what happened with me and Good Night Oppy.   I'm trying to figure out how I missed this amazing docu-movie from Amazon Studios which tells the story of Opportunity, nicknamed Oppy, a Mars rover launched in 2003 that was supposed to last 90 sols (Mars days) and ended up plodding along the Martian surface for 15 years!  The other mystery of how I missed this is two of the production companies that brought us this masterpiece are Amblin and Industrial Light & Magic no less. Part Two: Whoopi Goldberg Mark Marshall who was Steven Spielberg's assistant from 84-88  has graciously decided to share his memories and pictures from the making of that groundbreaking movie .  Mark Marshall -  When Whoopi Goldberg learned that Alice Walker’s novel, “The Color Purple,” was going to be adapted for the big screen, she wrote to the author and boldly stated that she would be happy to play “a piece of dirt on the floor.”  Alice replied that she knew who Whoopi was and had already sent her info to the producers.  At the time, Whoopi was performing her one-woman show on Broadway, however, due to director Steven Spielberg’s schedule, he was unable to fly to New York to catch a performance.  Instead, he flew Whoopi to Los Angeles and had her perform her entire show in the Amblin screening room before a VIP crowd (including Richard Pryor, Lionel Richie, and Michael Jackson) as well as Amblin Entertainment staff.  The evening was unforgettable, ...

The Lost Key: Amblin‘  Exclusive guest post by Joerg Breitenfeld For an ever-long time, Spielberg's first foray into cinematic terrain remained a mystery. Only a small circle of people had seen his 35mm short film during its short-lived theatrical run in December 1968. Even fewer had access to a film recording. Amblin' was never broadcast on television or sold on disc or otherwise. Compared to the director's other films, very little has been written about Amblin', although it paved the way for Spielberg's career as a professional director. Finally, eight years ago, a video recording appeared on Vimeo and YouTube. It was of deplorable quality and came from obscure sources, but that was fine for me and all the other Spielberg aficionados who had waited so long for the lost key to Spielberg’s early work. An announcement from Amblin Partners on Tuesday revealed that Amblin Chairman, Steven Spielberg will also handle the CEO role after Chief Executive, Michael Write is to step down.  This will hand the CEO position to Steven Spielberg. The press release explains that Write will still be on board for two more upcoming films.  Jeff Small will remain as president and co-CEO with Spielberg.  Spielberg gave this statement on the exiting Write: “I have always enjoyed working with Michael and the unique creative collaboration we’ve shared going back to his days at Turner Broadcasting,” Spielberg said in a release that Amblin just issued. “I am very pleased to continue our relationship and that he is joining our upcoming projects, “The Talisman” and “The Wand,” as an executive producer. Comcast's Universal Filmed Entertainment has purchased a minority stake in Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners.  Jeff Shell from CUFE joins the board. It seems Amblin Partners are quite a popular investment with other backers consisting of Participant Media, Reliance Entertainment, Entertainment One (eOne), and Alibaba Pictures. In a joint statement NBC Universal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer, Shell and Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley said  “We are big believers in Amblin Partners and its proven ability to create the kind of quality films that appeal to broad, global audiences...Steven is a genius and has always been part of our family, as well as an incredible partner to Universal. The SyFy Channel has announced they are working with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television for a Brave New World TV series, based on Aldous Huxley‘s 1932 dystopian sci-fi classic of the same name.  This will see the channel re-teaming with Spielberg's Amblin.  The first time being back in 2003 with the excellent UFO heavy, Taken which won an Emmy for best miniseries. SyFy's Dave Howe, President said in the press release: “Brave New World is one of the most influential genre classics of all time. Its provocative vision of a future gone awry remains as powerful and as timeless as ever. Over at TV Line they are reporting that HBO has completed a deal to bring the Broadway show All the Way to the small screen.  The show recently won a 2014 Tony award for Best play as well as best actor.  The TV version is set to feature Bryan Cranston reprising his role as President Lyndon Johnson, and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment is producing the project. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan is adapting the show from his own script for the made-for-TV film. The story takes place in 1964 during Johnson's first year in office following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. ABC has ordered a pilot episode to Amblin's new TV drama, The Visitors.  The new pilot episode, with hope to being a series is based on Ray Bradbury's "Zero Hour." Amblin TV is co-producing with Dawn Olmstead’s Grady Girl. Olmstead found the short story and brought it to Amblin TV, which developed it with writer Soo Hugh, who has worked on Amblin’s "The River" and "Under The Dome." "The Visitors" chronicles the race against the clock to defeat an unseen alien enemy out to destroy the world using our most precious resource against us. ABC Studios is producing. Looper young star Pierce Gagnon has been cast as Halle Berry's son in CBS' new summer series Extant, the network announced Tuesday. From Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, the futuristic thriller follows a female astronaut (Berry) who tries to reconnect with her husband and son (Gagnon) when she returns after a year-long solo mission in outer space.
