"The BFG" Will Screen at Cannes

One of Roald Dahl's giants, as seen in the trailer.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Steven Spielberg's upcoming film The BFG will play out of competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

One of the most popular and prestigious film festivals in the world, Cannes is known both for the acclaimed films which appear as part of the competition and those like The BFG which are not eligible for awards consideration.  Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull played to a positive reception in 2008, and in 2013 Spielberg served as the jury president, giving top awards to Blue Is the Warmest Color and Inside Llewyn Davis. This year's jury is headed by George Miller, whose Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in Cannes to great acclaim in 2015. Other films screening out of competition include Jodie Foster's Money Monsterx, starring George Clooney.

While most of us won't be lucky enough to make it to Cannes for the screening, this gives us the opportunity to gauge critical reaction to Spielberg's latest well before its July 1 U.S. and U.K. release date.
