Remembering My First Star Wars Album

Back in 77 when I was lucky enough to watch Star Wars for the first time, I remember leaving the cinema with my brother full of excitement and a craving that really hasn't gone away.  Sitting down to watch Star Wars for the first time initiated my need for a daily dose of that galaxy far far away. Way before the Internet or multi channel TV, Star Wars fans of the seventies would find their Star Wars fix in any way they could.  For me this fix would be finding any snippets of Star Wars on TV, whether it be an interview with a member of the cast (usually on Saturday morning kids TV,) collecting the Topps trading cards, collecting the Kenner figures and ships, buying Star Wars books and comics or by listening to the soundtrack. It was this last one for me that really helped my fix.  The first Star Wars album I owned was not the original soundtrack but it was as close as you can get.  Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra the album consisted of side A having a sel

British cinematographer Douglas Slocombe has died at the age of 103

Sad news as we learn British cinematographer Douglas Slocombe has died at the age of 103, his family has said.  Slocombe shot over a hundred movies and became one of the finest cinematographers who ever lived.  Steven Spielberg chose Slocombe to shoot Raiders of the Lost Ark as well as the other two Indy movies.  He was in his 70's when Spielberg asked him! From the BBC : In 1939 he filmed some of the earliest fighting of World War Two in Poland. He won Baftas for the Great Gatsby, The Servant, and Julia, while his other work included the Italian Job and Jesus Christ Superstar. Among his own favourites was Kind Hearts and Coronets, the Ealing Studios classic of 1949, starring Alec Guinness and Joan Greenwood. A decade earlier, as a young newsreel cameraman, London-born Slocombe had shot parts of the Nazi invasion of Poland. The quality of that footage, which was used in the documentary Lights Out in Europe, persuaded Ealing to employ him. Slocombe's daughter said h

New Close Encounters Documentary 'Who Are You People?' Is Essential Viewing For Spielberg Fans

'Who Are You People?' is a wonderful documentary that tells the story of Close Encounters of The Third Kind and how the movie came to be made in the small town of Mobile, Alabama. First time director but a veteran to Hollywood as a cameraman/cinematographer, Jonathan E. Robinson has quite simply made a gem.  Running for an hour and a half, this professionally made documentary has a shining asset and that is the residents of Mobile who tell their memories and personal experiences of working on the sets and around the production crew.  There's no commentary or annoying editing, instead Robinson has been clever, allowing the residents to carry the documentary and I am so thankful for him doing this.  It's not often a behind the scenes documentary comes along where you hear new stories on a movie that you've loved since a child but 'Who Are You People?' is one of them.  It reminded me of the excellent book, ' Jaws: Memories From Martha's Vineyard

Star Wars Rebels - Hera and Kanan: Space Married

Hera and Kanan: 'Space Married': Star Wars Rebels Since 1977 Lucasfilm has been bringing new dynamics to the forefront of character relationships and their unyielding ability to strike-up contagious chemistry on screen. Not just between comrades in arms, but brotherly-love too, and beyond the realms of everlasting friendships – romantic banter and love. Star Wars isn’t all laser-swords and blasters, it’s about the heavy too, and I don’t mean the artillery. The Power Couple: The original trilogy gave us Han and Leia; a pairing that definitely went against all odds and yeah, I know, never tell Han the odds. These two represented the old phrase, “opposites attract” and did they ever! Like magnets and in time, even Leia submissively gave in and caved to Han’s much needed kiss. These two on screen were electric and were noted as Star Wars “Power Couple.” Let’s face it, who didn’t want that “I love you. I know.” relationship? Fast forward to the prequel era a

Previously Unreleased Home Video Shot By Steven Spielberg On Set Of Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.

Here's a gem of a find.  It's Steven Spielberg who appears to be playing with a new camcorder.  He ends up filming the cast of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade .  Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Alison Doody and John Rhys-Davies are all in the shot.  I love how Steven discovers the macro setting and ends up filming close up shots of Doody, Rhys-Davies and himself. While filming a close up of Doody she asks "why are you putting it on my mouth?"  To which John Rhys-Davies chips in with his wicked sense of humour "Just checking for herpes that's all." The footage was uploaded to Youtube by footageforpro.com .  They say in the description: This video was shot in Venice on the 7th August 1988, while the cast of "Indiana Jones and the last Crusade" was visiting the local police station. You can see Sean Connery, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Alison Doody, John Rhys-Davis and Spielberg himself. I bought from the owner of the camera the permissi

Respect The Wind: Revisiting "Twister" 20 Years Later

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of one of Amblin Entertainment's biggest 1990's blockbusters,   Twister. In some ways Twister can be seen as the younger sibling of Jurassic Park, though it hasn't inspired the same fondness or enthusiasm over the years. This is to a large degree justified: simply put, Jurassic Park is a much better movie, and Twister has some serious story problems. Yet for its admitted faults, the story of a group of intrepid stormchasers also has its virtues. I saw it in the theater five times in the summer of 1996, and recently decided to revisit the film and see how it held up. While its faults are even more obvious in retrospect, I  believe that as an example of blockbuster action thriller filmmaking, on some levels it deserves more respect than it usually gets. of the 1990's, Twister 's biggest weakeness is its story, which lacks a strong structure and sense of high enough stakes.   We're given nothing more than a "re
