We've come to know him als Hoskins, the man who was hired to investigate and protect one (of many) InGen's hidden agenda's in Jurassic World.

But he crossed the paths of Amblin some 18 years ago, when he co-starred in Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black as Edgar the farmer, who lost quite a bit of his personality when he, as one of the first earthlings, met the alien 'Bug' race that wants to take down the Men in Black Organisation and control the universe.

Well, Hoskins, Edgar, or as most earthlings have come to know him: Vincent D'Onofrio, turned 56 today (June 30th).

Happy Birthday to you Mr. D'Onofrio, and I do hope to keep seeing a lot of you.

And I want to thank director Stanley Kubrick for introducing you to me (and many other filmgoers) as Private Lawrence in the masterfully Full Metal Jacket, back in 1987.

Ronny.

14 years ago today (June 29) Steven Spielbergs Artificial Intelligence, based on a story from Stanley Kubrick, went on general release in the US (after two premieres in New York (June 26, and Los Angeles June 28).

a.i.

Artificial Intelligence deals with 11 year old David, a human cyborg adopted by Henry and Monica Swinton, two people who are still in mourn over the loss of their own son (who had an incurable disease and has been stored in cryo-stasis, untill that day his desease can be dealt with)
a.i.

Starring as David is Haley Joel Osment, who, at that time was one of Hollywood's hottest child-actors, espescially since his success with/in The Sixth Sense.

As we had come to expect, the Special Effects Steven used didn't let us down either...

But one of the most amazing effects (as far as I was concerned) must have been Teddy (voiced by Jack Angel).

And of course the music,... Need I say more ?

Happy Birthday A.I.

And don't forget: Steven isn't done with Artificial Intelligence yet: Starting this wednesday (July 1st.) the second season of Extant is about to be launched...

It's time for another celebration.

On this day, 10 years ago Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds went on general release in the US.

To celebrate this, let's take a few looks behind the scenes of the making of the film that had a 72-day shooting schedule, just like Spielberg's Schindler's List and Raiders of the lost ark before that.

The film was originally slated for a 2007 release, however when both the director and the star became available, it was decided that the new date would be 2005, even though that left Spielberg and his team only 7 months between the first day of shooting and the premiere.

To achieve that Steven decided to start off by filming the various mass-sequences first and he decided to step down from his usual storyboarding and opted for a digital Pre-Vis system George Lucas had demonstrated to him during the making of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

War of the Worlds marked the third collaboration between David Koepp and Steven Spielberg, where David wrote the screenplay for a film Steven directed. But David wasn't the first choice. Originally Steven asked J.J. Abrams to write the screenplay, but due to other commitments (Abrams' was working on the pilot for Lost at the time) J.J. turned down the offer.

Here's a transcript of an interview David did, in the days preceding the premiere of War of the Worlds.

And for those who don't remember what the film was all about:

On the day War of the Worlds opened in the US, Steven started principal photography on his next project: Munich, that would open in 2005 as well.

Happy Birthday.

Ronny.

Jogcast Radio returns this week with the second of the Clone Wars Retrospective specials, and this one is an entertaining chat with three brilliant well known members of the Star Wars fan community as we get to hear their insights and thoughts on The Clone Wars fandom.

Kenny Kraly Jr, a long time listener and friend of Jogcast Radio joins the show and he goes through his highly positive view of Star Wars, and all the in between.

Then onto Matt Clifton who went to Celebration this past year and even met some of the shows regular guests such as Ryan Stampfli. Matt is a great fan, and fellow podcaster, and can be found along with friend of the show David B. Senden on the Fandom Awakens Radio podcast.

Last but not least, the show gets to meet David Manderville who has a unique take on what the Clone Wars has done for fandom.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and remember we still have one still to come.

Sometimes even Spielberg likes to make fun of himself.

Just look at his cameos in Gremlins, GoldmemberThe Blues Brothers, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (blink and you'll miss it), or Cindy Lauper's Video Goonies 'r Good Enough.

But there is more...

In 2006 he collaborated on Saturday Night Life for a sketch about...., well just watch and figure out what films he is making fun of for yourselves.

Enjoy Lasercats (7).

Steven Spielberg is a bit of a gamer as we know and was recently spotted at the E3 event at the Los Angeles Convention Center playing the latest Forza racing game that will be released on the Xbox One.  The racing setup is pretty impressive with three large screens, steering wheel and pedals.

In this video you get a brief glimpse of Spielberg playing the game around 6 minutes in.

So this is a double episode which is a taster for when the season starts proper in the autumn/fall depending on where you are.
For those that don’t know, Star Wars Rebels is an animated TV show on Disney XD that’s takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
'A brave and clever ragtag starship crew stands up against the evil Empire as it tightens its grip on the galaxy and hunts down the last of the Jedi Knights.' - IMDB

As per usual Spoilers apply from this point in!

A long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far Far Away....

We join our rag tag band in a space battle as they try to steal some cargo from an Imperial convoy. They succeed and jump to Hyperspace.
Back on Lothal the imperials are still persistent on reigning havoc and capturing the rebels.  Enter Vader to clear up the mess that his understudies have failed to clear up. He threatens Minister Tua with a visit from Tarkin!

In a panic Tua contacts the rebels and is willing to trade secret Imperial Info for safe passage off the planet. They hatch a plan to evacuate the Minister and return to Lothal. However Ezra gets a bad 'cold' feeling on the way.

When they land there is a heavier Imperial presence holding the planet in a vice like grip. In order to progress with the plan Kanan mugs a Stormtrooper of his armoand wears it as a disguise.  However, the plan goes awry when the Minister arrives at the rendezvous point with mutton chops himself, Agent Kallus! A firefight ensues and the shuttle that was going to going to aid the evacuation explodes, killing the Minister and the secrets she held within! Looking on from a distance is a certain Dark Lord Of The Sith! The rebels flee and go underground...literally!

They hatch another plan and decide as the Imperials are all hunting them that their stronghold will be somewhat deserted and they can steal another shuttle to make their escape. Kanan and Ezra get through security in disguise by using a mind trick on a weak minded Stormtrooper, once inside they are joined by rest of the gang, however it’s a an elaborate trap by Vader and he arrives dramatically to kick Ezra and Kanan's butt in a lightsaber fight. As a distraction Sabine blows up some walkers and they fall on Vader who survives and the rebels escape on the stolen shuttle.

They realise they must leave the planet and seek the help of Lando, who although off planet directs them to his strangely southern speaking droid who sets them up with machines to throw the imperials off their scent to aid their escape off world. The plan works, but unbeknown to the group Vader has left a tracking device on their ship and when the rebels arrive at their new fleet of Rebel friends, shortly after Vader arrives alone in a TIE fighter and proceeds to take out Phoenix Fighter squadrons A-wings and attack the fleet single handed with some fancy flying and all out bad assery! Vader realises that Anakin's apprentice lives and Ahsoka feels him through the force too!

The fleet and the rebels escape whilst Vader is incapacitated by his own Star Destroyers!
Aboard his Star Destroyer Vader gets a message from the Emperor instructing him to dispatch another Inquisitor to pursue the Rebels....

This really feels like the first film, both visually and by sound, the music is fantastic. And there are a few moments that really take me back.  The ships inside have a 'A New Hope' feel. Kanan and Hera also have a 'Han and Leia' moment and Kanan and Ezra use mind tricks on the Stormtrooper ala' Ben Kenobi in Mos Eisley. Of course Kanan dressed in disguise as a 'Buckethead' wreaks of Han and Luke. These are all great tributes to keep you wanting more and enticed.

After a while you tend to forget you are watching a children's animation program, this definitely has more of an adult 'feel' to it. I'm surprised they crammed so much into one episode straight away. My thought is that they are going to book-end the series, not very episode is going to be great...remember 'The Clone Wars?'

Vader is Bad Ass and his parts are very dramatic, which is the way he should be! He's a schemer, superb pilot and stronger than ever! And being voiced by James Earl Jones just enhances the experience.

Ahsoka has a small part to play, does she know it's Vader? Ezra has taken on a lot more responsibility and is clearly gaining respect from his peers by making decisions and hatching plans, although attacking Vader wasn’t wise! Whilst the rest of the rebels crew are happy to be fighting alongside the other rebels, Kanan doesn’t want any part of it and would rather go back to the way things were, he doesn’t want another war and given how the last one went, I don’t blame him!
