indiana jones statue

It seems that every month we get a little reminder from the people at the top of Lucasfilm, Disney or one of the creators that Indiana Jones is coming and to just be patient.  Bob Iger the CEO over at Disney is taking his turn this month.  While talking to Bloomberg he dropped in the reminder while talking about Star Wars, “Indiana Jones, by the way, which will be coming.”

Last month we had Steven Spielberg tell us that Indy won't be recast and that he's willing to do an Indy V but sooner rather than later.  Frank Marshall the legendary producer has insisted it's on the cards as soon as they figure out what they are going to do.  Harrison Ford, Kathleen Kennedy and others associated with the franchise have all voiced the same statement that once they all know which direction to go, they will be moving forward quicker than a boulder chasing down Indy himself.  I suspect that the other franchise known as Star Wars is the main focus at this time.

Looking forward to next months similar statement.

Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle

I continue my mini reviews of tracks from the soundtrack to John Williams' Star Wars The Force Awakens.

After Finn's Confession and Maz's Counsel which have a slow mysterious feel we are Force pushed straight into the dark side with the appropriate track thirteen, Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle.  It's only fitting that the main bad guy of the movie gets his own theme just like Darth Vader before him.  John Williams recently commented on Kylo Ren’s theme, he tells us:

“There’s a more ruminative part that is usually done softly,” Williams said. “I don’t think it portrays any particular weakness, but possibly hesitancy. But then there’s the motif that’s often strong, that seems to be the embodiment of evil. I thought that it should be a relative of Darth Vader, but also something entirely different in terms of melody.”

Using a five note cue and repeated throughout this track has an aggressive feel and just like Ren himself, a sense of conflict and confusion.  It's powerful, menacing and moody with sweeping brassy statements.  I have a feeling it will be heard again in episode VIII.

You can also read my mini reviews of:

Track six, Rey's Theme.
Track ten, Finn's Confession
Track eleven, Maz's Counsel

Maz's Counsel

Maz's Counsel is track eleven on the soundtrack to Star Wars The Force Awakens.  At first it's a slow piece with a strong presence of cellos and extended strings that evoke a sense of mystery for the first half.  Then the piece builds before we have our first occurrence of The Force theme on the soundtrack which only lasts a few seconds before we have an eruption of instruments bringing the track to a dramatic end.

This is a classic John Williams piece that takes you on a journey of various emotions all within one piece.  It's three minutes eight seconds long and feels like a soundtrack within itself.

Next I will be looking at track thirteen, Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle.

You can also read my previous mini reviews of track ten, Finn's Confession and track six, Rey's Theme.

finn's confession

Track ten on the soundtrack to Star Wars The Force Awakens is Finn's Confession, a slow and sad piece with strings that unfold to a more uplifting feel as Finn finally relieve's his burden by confessing.  At times it reminded me of another John Williams soundtrack, War Horse with hints of The Phantom Menace, especially Anakin's Destiny.

In the movie Finn talks about his experience with The First Order, the horrors he witnessed and being forced to perform.  Here the track plays which captures his sadness, guilt and eventual confession.  The magic of John Williams manages to evoke all these emotions in just two minutes and nine seconds.  A beautiful and powerful piece which has similarities to track six, Rey's Theme which you can hear hints of at one minute 20 seconds into Finn's Confession.

You can read my mini review of track six, Rey's Theme here.

Coming up next I will look at track eleven, Maz’s Counsel

In an interview published on the BMI website on the 22nd of December, John Williams discusses his latest Star Wars project, The Force Awakens and the difference working with J.J. Abrams and George Lucas.  He said:

I’ll tell you a little bit about that. We wouldn’t be having this conversation if it hadn’t been for George Lucas’ creation of Darth Vader and Yoda and Luke Skywalker and all the rest of it. J.J. Abrams, who is the new young director of the new film, has done a brilliant job, I think. The wonderful thing about J.J. Abrams, just one of his many wonderful qualities, is that he is very appreciative of George’s legacy and has been very careful to forge a tapestry that’s strongly related to the originals, which he has done.

He also discussed his latest project with Steven Spielberg, The BFG which hits cinemas next year:

We actually worked on it, just yesterday and today. And after this phone call I’m going to go and begin on reel one and that will be the rest of my day. And this is also, I think, the twenty-eighth film that Steven and I have done together. We’ve been working together since 1973. I mean, it’s amazing. I think he has done one or two films that I have not been able to do, but it has been more like a marriage than a working relationship. And we are also very good friends. We share offices very near each other. It’s been a great joyous ride with him.

rey's theme

Rey's Theme from the soundtrack to Star Wars The Force Awakens is quickly becoming a fan favourite.  Track number six on the album, the music takes a change of pace from the opening tracks with ascending strings and woodwind melody that will evoke emotions similar to the Force theme from previous Star Wars movies.  The theme is featured earlier in The Force Awakens soundtrack and is first heard in track two, The Scavenger.  I suspect that this piece will feature again in episode VIII and could easily become one of the principle pieces to the new trilogy.

The piece reminds me of previous soundtracks, especially The Terminal and War Horse with a hint of Harry Potter.  It really is the stand out piece on the soundtrack with a third motif that will leave you smiling.  You can listen to the piece below.  The track is 3 minutes 12 seconds long.  Let me know if you enjoy the track.

Coming up next we will have a review of track ten on the soundtrack to Star Wars The Force Awakens, Finn's Confession.

Dreamworks Animation has extended their licencing agreement with Steven Spielberg.  Last week saw a change to Dreamworks (not the animation) to Amblin Partners which sees new backers and collaborations.  Here's the press release on the new extension to the deal:

On December 21, 2015, DreamWorks Animation entered into an amendment to the License Agreement, effective as of January 1, 2009 with DW II Management, Inc. (the “Spielberg Entity”) and Steven Spielberg. Pursuant to the License Agreement, DreamWorks previously granted the Spielberg Entity (a) the right to use certain trademarks, service marks and trade names containing the term “DreamWorks” and (b) the right to grant a sublicense (the “Sublicense”) to DreamWorks II Holding Co., LLC and its wholly owned and controlled subsidiaries (collectively, “Holding Company”) to use such trademarks, service marks and trade names. Pursuant to the Amendment, the parties have further amended the License Agreement to extend the term of the License Agreement until the earlier of (i) the initial release date of the thirtieth motion picture produced (or co-produced), acquired, distributed or released by or for Holding Company, or (ii) January 31, 2016. DWA also consented to Spielberg Entity permitting the assignment by Holding Company of all of its rights and obligations under the Sublicense to Storyteller Holding Co. LLC (“Assignee”), provided that pursuant to such assignment Assignee shall expressly assume and agree to be bound by all of the obligations of Holding Company under the Sublicense.

Mr. Spielberg is the beneficial owner of more than 5% of the Company’s outstanding Class A Common Stock. Spielberg Entity is wholly owned and controlled by Mr. Spielberg. Mr. Spielberg also indirectly owns a minority interest in Assignee.

universal star wars bb-8

It's become a tradition that movie studios congratulate each other when their previous box office record gets beaten by another movie and studio, especially when it comes to Lucasfilm and Star Wars.  With Star Wars The Force Awakens taking the opening box office record last weekend from Universal's effort earlier in the year with Jurassic World, they have produced this picture.  It's shows a T-Rex putting a medal over BB-8 in recognition of their achievement.

Frank Marshall, the producer of Jurassic World tweeted the picture along with a congratulatory message:

T'was the night before Christmas and all was quiet.  Let's rectify that and make it even more like Christmas with ten festive tracks by John Williams.  Merry Christmas.

Lets start with a classic from the movie, Home Alone.

We'll return to Home Alone later.  Next up it's a real treat.  John Williams conducting Sleigh Ride with the excellent Boston Pops.

Over to Home Alone 2 now with Christmas at Carnegie Hall.

All aboard the Hogwarts express now as we head to the magical land of Harry Potter for Christmas, floating candles and all.

Staying within the Harry Potter universe we have this wonderfully majestic piece from The Chamber of Secrets.  Has a magical Christmas feel.

Back to Home Alone now.  We couldn't do a John Williams Christmas list without this one.

A short track now from John Williams' latest soundtrack, The Book Thief.

Finally lets have a really traditional medley of Christmas music.  Thanks for reading and listening.  Merry Christmas everyone.

I have added all the above videos in one playlist for your enjoyment.  Click here.

the force awakens marks out of 10

It's been the opening weekend for Star Wars The Force Awakens and the overall feel has been a positive one.  But to be sure The Bearded Trio asked our followers, readers and fans on our Facebook page to mark the movie out of ten.  We had over 80 responses so we've added up all the scores and divided them to give you the average score.

So our readers are giving Star Wars The Force Awakens an average score of:

8 out of 10

That's not a bad score.  Some wanted to give it 11 or more (we added these as a 10) while a few gave the movie 2 or less.  But on average the movie was scoring between 6 and 9.  A solid start for the new Star Wars trilogy.

The trailer is out for Star Trek Beyond and Trek fans have been less than impressed saying it doesn't feel like Star Trek.  Simon Pegg has even spoken out and told us fans to be patient as there's more to come and has assured us that it will be more like Trek.  In the mean time here's five stills from the movie which hits cinemas next year.  I hope Pegg is right and the next Trek film starts to look like...well Star Trek.  No Beastie Boys music please.
