Born on this day in 1943 in Scarborough, Yorkshire in England is, Krishna Pandit Bhanji, or as we came to know him actor Ben Kingsley,

In 1982 he came to our attention with his Academy Award winning portrayal of Mahatma Ghandi in the film that swept away most of the Oscars that year (and keeping E.T. from winning an important one).
However he more than made up for this with his portrayal of Itzhak Stern in Schindler's List in 1993.

He was mad Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
Even with a career that has spanned almost 50 years he still keeps himself very busy, with at this moments 10 films or tv-series in various stages of completion.

Happy Birthday to you sir (or Knight) Kingsley.

frank oz rebels

With Frank Oz set to appear in the new episode of Star Wars Rebels episode 'Path of the Jedi' here's an interview with the voice of Yoda himself sent to us from Lucasfilm.  We've also included some more pictures from the episode and another clip from the show.

Q. What was your initial reaction to Yoda when you viewed the concept sketches for the character in 1979?
A. When I saw the first sketches they were different from the Yoda we now know. But still, I sensed who he was right away. That rarely happens, but it happened with him.

Q. Do you remember what George Lucas said to you to inspire you to come up with the voice that you chose for Yoda?
A. Actually George didn’t ask me to do the voice. I gave him a voice tape early on but I was told he wanted to try other people doing the voice. Over the year or so while post was going on, I would hear that many men were auditioned for Yoda’s voice. But at the last minute, when I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii with my first wife, I got a call that George would like to use my voice after all. So we shortened the honeymoon and I went to LA to record Yoda for EMPIRE. But to answer your question, I studied old men’s voices.

Q. You reportedly created your own personal backstory for Yoda in 1979 to help you get into character.  Is that true?  Do you still have those notes?
A. I may have them deep in storage…somewhere. The content was about Yoda’s history. His likes and dislikes. How he came to be on Dagobah. How Jedi behaved hundreds of years ago, etc. And also the notes included what Yoda knew about various people. What he knew about Luke, what he knew about Princess Leia, what he knew about Han Solo, and what he knew about Darth Vader.  What he knew about all the characters impacted by the Force.  I had asked George early on in the rehearsal period of The Empire Strikes Back, to let me have the whole script instead of having just my scenes. I felt if Yoda was so wise I needed to know what was going on throughout the script so Yoda could sense it all.

Q.  You've created so many wonderful characters over the years---how difficult or easy was Yoda compared to others you've created?
A. Creating characters is really not about one person. Yoda was designed by someone, built by someone, costumed by someone, described and had dialogue written by someone (George and Lawrence Kasdan), and directed by Kersh (Director, Irvin Kershner). What I do is take all the elements, plus what’s inside me, and bring them to life with, hopefully, a transformational and transcendent result.  That’s what happens with all the characters I’ve originated.
As I said I sensed who Yoda was right away when I saw the sketches, but what was different with Yoda is that he was not performing for an audience. I had to have him truthful to the script. And the major physical difference was that I had to have three people working him with me - all needing to be in exact sync with each other. That was really the challenging part - but the fun part too.

Q. How does it feel to be reprising the voice of Yoda for Star Wars Rebels after nearly ten years?
A. It was wonderful to be him again.

Q.  How did you like working with Dave Filoni, EP/Supervising Director of Star Wars Rebels?
A. Dave was great. He “got it.” We worked well together.
Q. What is your favorite Yoda line from the Star Wars movies?
A. I don’t really have a favorite. Although I liked reaching for the gravitas when Yoda says to Luke, “You will be. You will be,” after Luke says he’s not scared. I love opposites in characters. At first glance, Yoda is an impish character, but when he speaks of anything having to do with the Force he becomes profoundly serious.  That paradox is interesting to me. One doesn’t expect that kind of gravitas from a character that small and impish.

Recognizing it’s time for Ezra to undertake his next important step in Jedi training, Kanan and his apprentice quest for an ancient Jedi Temple on Lothal. Once there, Ezra begins a series of Jedi tests and receives some unexpected guidance from Jedi Master Yoda.

Ezra’s worst fears are revealed and Yoda returns when Star Wars Rebels airs at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Monday, January 5th on Disney XD.

bob iger falcon

Head of Disney has appeared on the cover of Fortune Magazine accompanied in the background by everyone's favourite space ship, the Millennium Falcon.

Also inside is a composite shot with Iger stood in front of Han Solo's ship.

Fortune magazine had this to say about the image:
As for the cover shot, Yannick Dusseault, visual effects art director for The Force Awakens, and his team gave Fortune six options showing the Falcon in different ways. The resulting image required the custom rendering of ILM’s computer generated Falcon. According to ILM, the fabled ship was rendered in wireframe form (a skeletal version) as well as a more layered “textured render,” which were combined in Photoshop to create the final image.

JOHN WILLIAMS'S FILM MUSIC

Hard to imagine, but until some 6 months ago no book (in the English language that is) had ever been published on the work and career of our very own John Williams, one of THE most renowned film composers in film history and with 49 Academy Award nominations (as of 2014), the most nominated composer and second-most nominated person (after Walt Disney) ever.

But fortunately enough, earlier this year, Emilio Audissino ended this void, with the publication of John Williams's Film Music. A study of John's entire career, starting some 20 years before John actually started composing himself (which was in 1954 for a documentary called You are Welcome, as the book states), thus showing where John got his inspiration, all the way to Lincoln, John's most recent collaboration with Steven Spielberg.

Audissino has major chapters devoted to Williams's iconic scores for Jaws, Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and, of course has a nice update of all the work he has ever produced. Th book is written from the heart, and the only thing I could do, when I started reading it, was to pop in a few CD's, just to get the feeling that Emilio so successfully tried to describe.

With 2014 nearing it's end, and according to this work it marking the 60th anniversary for John as a composer, this book has to be required reading for all fans of this maestro. I, for one, am glad it was finally made.

It looks like the waiting may finally be over. Ever since the release of the Blu-Ray box 'Steven Spielberg Director's Collection' the main question on the mind of almost every Spielberg fan has been: "Where is Munich ?" Looks like they (and we) won't have to wait much longer.
On Blu-Ray.com, we finally noticed a date for the release of the film on Blu-Ray: February 17th, 2015. We couldn't think of better news to start 2015 with.

No news yet on the extra's, but time will tell.

Star Trek 3 will be playing in movie theatres on July 8, 2016, 50 years after the television series premiered according to a press release from Paramount Pictures.
The 2016 release date coincides with the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the original Star Trek television series, according to CNET.
“The original series of ‘Star Trek‘ was first broadcast in September 1966 on NBC, after an unsuccessful pilot was made a couple of years earlier. The show ran for three years and spawned several spin-offs and a series of movies.”

Possible Clara-related spoilers for those who have not watched the episode "Last Christmas."

In the lead up to this year's Doctor Who Christmas special, there was quite a bit of speculation about whether or not Clara Oswald's time in the TARDIS would come to an end. It was already confirmed a few weeks back that Peter Capaldi would be returning for the next series, but Jenna Coleman's status was left unaddressed. Now that the Christmas special has aired, the matter has been settled.

According to the BBC, Jenna Coleman will return for series 9 - and not just for a few episodes, but for the entire series. Here is what Coleman had to say about the decision to stay on as Clara:

"It's wonderful," she said. "I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn't walk away with the story being unresolved."

She added: "There is so much more to do. I think they've finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.

"The arrival of the 12th Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change, so I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up."
Peter Capaldi added that he was "thrilled" with the news because Jenna Coleman is a "pleasure to work with."

The first episode of series 9 is titled "The Magician's Apprentice," but a premiere date has not been set.

indiana bones

Ever wondered what your dog gets up to when you leave the house?  Wonder no more.  Check out this extremely clever video showing a very lovably dog as Indiana Bones.  It's cleverly done but as a cat person myself I want the cats to win.

When his owner Zach leaves for the afternoon, little Indiana Bones discovers adventure in search of his lost bark. This video was created with 3 rolls of duct tape, 108 glue sticks, 18 large boxes of cardboard, a few all nighters with an adorable puppy.

Dimitri Diatchenko

Dimitri Diatchenko who starred in Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the TV show Bones has been charged with animal cruelty after killing and cooking his girlfriends pet rabbit.

Diatchenko, 46 was sharing a home with a former girlfriend who told him they shouldn't be sharing any more.  This led to the actor killing her rabbit and eating half of it.  When the former girlfriend returned home it is claimed the actor threatened to do the same to her.

He could face up to four years and eight months in jail.

Diatchenko's arraignment has been set for Dec. 30 and prosecutors are expected to ask that his bail be increased to $90,000, according to a news release.

george lucas rare behind the scenes

Here's a rare video showing George Lucas behinf the scenes on the Star Wars set.  There's no audio but this is a rare gem.

Thanks for sharing by: JASON EATON (Found via: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/) Thanks to: Damien Slattery

Unfortunately the original video has no audio!

YahooMovies: "A Deleted 'Star Wars' Scene Comes Alive in Rare Behind-the-Scenes Footage"
The first half of the (silent) clip shows a 30-something George Lucas conferring with cinematographer Gilbert Taylor before discussing a scene — cut from the final film — in which Mark Hamill (Luke Sykwalker), Garrick Hagon (Biggs Darklighter) and Koo Stark traipse around the Tatooine settlement of Anchorhead.

Though Biggs is glimpsed briefly in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope — he’s one of the X-Wing pilots killed in duty during the attack on the first Death Star — his original role was noticeably bigger: A scene cut from early in the film portrayed him and Luke as best pals, with Biggs serving as a kind of surrogate big-brother to the young Jedi-to-be.
The second half of the clip shows crew members operating the WED-15 repair droid — a much fancier version of the WED-15-77 that Luke and his Uncle Owen used on their moisture farm. The arid air of Tunisia played havoc with radio controls, particularly the remote-control R2-D2: it was a problem on the set on the first movies, and even plagued the 2002 shoot of Attack of the Clones. Hopefully, our good buddy Ball Droid (aka BB-8) fared better in the desert when J.J. Abrams filmed the forthcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

Christmas lights set in time to the classic Star Wars theme and others by John Williams.  Here's what the creator has to say about this wonderful spectacle:

Here's my tribute to my favorite songs on Star Wars! The neighbors are very supportive especially since I use the display to raise money for the poor and homeless through my church. A lot of people have been asking about how to donate to my church's free dining program online - if that's on your heart, please use this link and God bless! https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
I sequenced the show using LOR, mixed the music/sound effects with Digital Performer, and filmed it using a 35' lift :) This is now my second year decorating. I built all the props using wood, metal, acrylic and corrugated plastic. I am a music/teacher director for a living (COVA Conservatory in Oakland and Centerville Presbyterian Church in Fremont), hence the massive instruments! If you look closely (especially during the Cantina song) the instruments are playing the real notes! The beams can be seen for miles but I went out of my way to avoid shining the beams on houses and flight paths. The guitar is 17', the piano is 19' and the drums are standard. About 12,500 channels running around 100,000 lights. Also, Come by and see it in person on the corner of Lafayette and Ruschin in Newark most nights from 6-10pm. Because of the light beams on the roof, I turn off the display in heavy rain. Fair use for educational purposes. Merry Christmas everyone!
List of tracks in order of mix:

“Star Wars Main Title and the Arrival at Naboo” – Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

“Duel of the Fates” – Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

“Across the Stars (Love Theme)” – Star Wars Episode II – The Phantom Menace

“Battle of the Heroes” – Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (Light Saber Fight)

“The Hologram; Binary Sunset” – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

“Cantina Band” – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

“Ben Kenobi’s Death/TIE Fighter Attack” – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (TIE Fighter Crash)

“The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)” – Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

“Victory Celebration, End Title” – Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
