falling skies tnt

The Spielberg produced alien invasion TV show, Falling Skies returned to US TV screens on the weekend and season 4 ratings got off to a healthy start with a total of 4.7 million viewers tuning in.

TNT enjoyed high ratings for it's productions as they also had 7.4 million viewers tune in to their new action adventure series, The Last Ship.  This new series was aired at 9pm and 11pm for their encore, one hour before Falling Skies which continued the healthy figures for TNT with a strong start for Falling Skies.

“Just two weeks into its summer slate, TNT’s Sunday night action-adventures and Monday and Tuesday night crime dramas are delivering on the promise of our newly energized brand,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “We couldn’t be happier with last night’s launch of The Last Ship and Falling Skies, which come to TNT from two of the industry’s most successful storytellers: Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg.”

During a podcast interview for Humans From Earth, Robert Orci the director of Star Trek 3 which is set to be released in 2016 has confirmed that the next film will be set in “deep space,” saying:
In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.
Robert Orci will take on the direction of the third Star Trek "reboot" after the first two were directed by J.J. Abrams who jumped galaxies to direct Star Wars VII.

With Star Trek focusing on their original five year mission, could this lead to a TV series us Trek fans long for?  Trek's home is on the TV.  Are you listening Netflix?

What do you think?  Should Star Trek stick to the big screen or make a return to a weekly format?

As the United States celebrates Independence Day next month, viewers of A Capitol Fourth on PBS will be treated to something truly special.  Legendary and award-winning composer John Williams will be on hand to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra, the Joint Armed Forces Chorus, the Choral Arts Society of Washington, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, and the Armed Forces Color Guard as they perform his special arrangement, for orchestra and chorus, of The Star-Spangled Banner.

"It's a privilege to celebrate the birthday of our National Anthem, which has brought such great strength and inspiration to the American experience for 200 years," said Williams.

The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key on September 14, 1814 when he witnessed the nation's flag flying triumphantly after a prolonged attack on Fort McHenry in Maryland.  It was originally written as a poem entitled 'Defence of Fort McHenry' and was later set to music and renamed.  It became the national anthem for the United States of America on March 3, 1931.

A Capitol Fourth is scheduled to air on Friday, July 4 from 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. ET.

ChicagoTribune.com are reporting George Lucas has selected Chicago for the location of the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum.  It's also reported the name of the museum will change to Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas has selected Chicago over Los Angeles and San Francisco as the future home of his collection of art and movie memorabilia, according to a spokeswoman for the museum.
A vote by the museum’s board, which would make the decision official, is expected Wednesday. The board also is expected to change the name of the museum from the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts.
Pending approval of the Chicago Plan Commission, Lucas' institution would be located on parking lots between Soldier Field and McCormick Place and would open in 2018. Architectural renderings will be presented to city officials in early fall, according to a statement ffrom the museum.

Terry Richards

Sad news as we find out that Terry Richards who played the swordsman from Indiana Jones has died.  He was 81.  Richards' career spanned 50 years and has appeared in films such as James Bond, Star Wars and Rambo.  He also doubled for Donald Sutherland, Tom Selleck and Christopher Lee.

Richards served in the Welsh Guards before being told by a friend that they needed extras with military training.  He was asked if he could fall from a scaffolding which ultimately led to his long career as a stuntman.

The role he will be most known for however will be the sword swinging Arab from Raiders of the Lost Ark.  The BBC write:
At a 30th anniversary screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 2011, Harrison Ford revealed details of Richards' most famous role as the Cairo Swordsman.

Harrison Ford said it was his idea not to duel with Richards, but to shoot him instead, as the Indiana Jones actor had fallen ill during the shoot.
"I was no longer capable of staying out of my trailer for more than it took to expose a role of film, which was 10 minutes, and then I would have to flee back there for sanitary facilities," said Ford.
He added that Richards, who had "trained and trained" for the role, was disappointed to lose the chance to show off his newly acquired sword skills.
The Cairo Swordsman did get its own action figure and has even appeared in Lego form.
His family revealed he died suddenly last Saturday 14 June, and his funeral is scheduled to take place in Ruislip, north west London, later.

"He was still in good health but he was more ill than he thought," said Mr Richards.

Mr Richards said his father had enjoyed "a good life" travelling all over the world.

Jim Nelson, the veteran sound editor and post production guru who helped put together Industrial Light & Magic for George Lucas to create the original Star Wars, has died. He was 81.

Hollywood Reporter write:

Nelson, whose real name was James M. Falkinburg, died June 18, his family announced in a paid obituary in the Los Angeles Times. No other details about his death were immediately available.
Since beginning his industry career at age 17, Nelson worked on 21 films, 38 TV series – worth more than 1,700 episodes – and many telefilms, documentaries and specials.
He served as a sound editor or effects man on Rock Around the Clock (1956), Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965), Head (1968), The Last Picture Show (1971), Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Lucas' American Graffiti (1973), The Exorcist (1973) and Badlands (1973), and he was an associate producer and unit production manager on The China Syndrome (1979).
"George brought in people meant to crack the whip. Whether they felt like they succeeded or not, I don't know. They wanted to go from zero to 60 in 1.2 seconds, and that wasn't in the cards. Jim Nelson buffered the whip cracking, and we all thank him for that," Dykstra said in a 2013 interview.
Nelson co-founded Edit-Rite, the premier postproduction facility of its time, in 1965. Seven years later, he launched James Nelson Enterprises and expanded into the production of features. In 1984, he helped Edlund found Boss Films and served as a vp and consultant.
His father, Sam Nelson, was an actor and director, and his brother is director Gary Nelson (Freaky Friday).
Survivors also include his wife of 36 years, Barbara; daughters Kimberley and Leslie; grandchildren James and Nicole; and great-grandson Jaden.

star trek continues

The Star Trek 3 release date has been confirmed by Paramount for 2016.

Star Trek 3 or Star Trek 13 if you like will be released in 2016 and its no coincidence this will tie in with the 50th anniversary of the franchise.  With 2015 being a no go area due to Star Wars VII and Jurassic World taking the centre stage, 2016 seems like a good fit for Kirk and co.

Robert Orci will direct with J.J. Abrams busy in a galaxy far far away.

In the mean time if you are suffering from Trek withdrawal check out this fan made series called Star Trek Continues.  Featuring original cast members and high production values.

rian johnson

Looper helmer Rian Johnson is said to be in talks and will begin working on Star Wars episode VIII.  Not just direct but write the script for Star Wars episode VIII.  Although not mentioned as yet on the official Star Wars website or any press releases sent out, Deadline are claiming the news is official.

They say:

I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII. I don’t know too much more at this point, but it is in keeping with Disney and Lucasfilm’s strategy of entrusting the venerable franchise to the best and brightest writers and directors, including the spinoff films that are being directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

pinewood shepperton

Pinewood Shepperton announced today they have received a long overdue government approval for expansion plans worth a whopping  $340 million (200 million pounds).

The plan includes building another 10 stages which will also see an impressive 3000+ jobs created.  The studios has claimed they have had to turn movie work away due to limitation with their current capacity.

CEO Ivan Dunleavy said: "Our project builds on the success of the government's policy for the creative industries and addresses the shortage of stage space in the U.K. As a result of today's green light from the Secretary of State, thousands of much needed new jobs will be created in this growing sector of the economy. We want to begin construction as soon as possible. I'd like to thank colleagues both within and outside the industry, for the tremendous support they have given the project."
The company said the decision would "secure the future growth of Pinewood Studios, which will address the clear need for additional capacity in the U.K."

john williams

Saturday gone people of Detroit had a double treat as John Williams conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at the Orchestra Hall.  Joining them on stage was long time friend, Steven Spielberg.

Projected on the large screen above them were clips from some of Spielberg's and Williams' classic such as Close Encounters and Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Accompanying the clips the DSO played signature tunes from each movie shown.

“If a movie can strike like lightning, then the score can be like thunder,” said Spielberg.  “I can direct bicycles to fly over the moon, but the music makes them fly.”
Spielberg and Williams were here as the star attractions of the DSO’s annual “Heroes Gala,” a sold-out black tie celebration that raised a whopping $1.25 million for the orchestra on Saturday. The 2014 honorees were Detroit businessmen Dan Gilbert and Matt Cullen, who played a key role in helping to mediate a settlement to the musicians’ strike three years ago and have spearheaded fund-raising efforts like the infamous Kid Rock-DSO collaboration from two years ago.
At one point during the evening a clip was shown of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with no music from John Williams.  “Let me show you how boring I can be without Johnny Williams,” said Spielberg.  Then the same clip was replayed with the famous John Williams soundtrack.  As Mark Stryker from Freep.com said:
from the scurrying winds and strings to underscore the chase to a witty percussive rattle giving life to a surprise cameo by a snake – added the coursing blood of emotion to the veins of the film.
Yet this scene also showed the brilliance of Spielberg’s filmmaking even without the music – his savvy pacing, the pinpoint timing of the jokes, the clever cuts and the subtle revelations of character. The scene was a unified whole without the score – as all movies must be – but it was so much richer and more magical with Williams’ music so perfectly attuned to the filmmaker’s aesthetic.
University of Michigan composer Michael Daugherty also commented on the talent of John Williams
“John Williams is the last great film composer standing,  he’s really the only one left who truly knows how to write for orchestra, who knows counterpoint and the old Hollywood style – that sense of how to underscore a drama, which has been abandoned by younger composers.”

Steven Spielberg has announced his next two projects and release dates have been confirmed.  As what is becoming a Spielberg trademark the director has chosen a serious and a not so serious project close to each other.

The news broke via Exhibitor Relations who tweeted the following:

"Spielberg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's THE BFG will sneak into theaters July 1, 2016."
"Spielberg's UNTITLED COLD WAR SPY THRILLER will go to war Oct. 16, 2015."
The Cold War spy thriller we reported is to be written by the Coen brothers and star Tom Hanks.

The Art of Ralph McQuarrie

DreamsAndVisionsPress.com contacted The Bearded Trio to inform us of their Kickstarter campaign they currently have going.  Their ambition is to bring us Ralph McQuarrie fans a 400+ page coffee table book featuring the largest collection of Ralph McQuarrie's non-Star Wars art ever published.
They were also kind enough to send us a few concept drawings McQuarrie did for E.T. to wet our appetites.  We've posted them below this article.  In the mean time make sure you check out the Kickstarter campaign and make a pledge.  They are offering some cool rewards including pin badges, copies of the book and for $40 you can get a print of the "power of god" drawing Ralph Mcquarrie did and made famous in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

We will add the Kickstarter at the top of our page for the duration of the campaign.

The Art of Ralph McQuarrie

Best known for his instrumental contributions to the making of the original Star Wars trilogy, Ralph McQuarrie has inspired several generations of film fans and artists. While much of his Star Wars artwork has been reproduced in numerous volumes over the years, his non-Star Wars work has previously only been available in The Art of Ralph McQuarrie, a limited edition that we (Dreams and Visions Press) published in 2007. That book is long out of print and now commands high prices on the secondary market.

With The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES, we will bring back into print a career-spanning retrospective of Ralph McQuarrie’s non-Star Wars artwork. At 13” x 9.5”, this 432-page volume is not only offered at a more affordable price point than our original 2007 release, one third of the content is original to this edition. That's hundreds of Ralph McQuarrie illustrations spanning all aspects of his body of work.

We've been hard at work on the book for the past several months. Our efforts have not just been focused on assembling new art, but upgrading source materials where possible, and doing additional research to provide more details on many of the pieces within, both new and old. We are on track to finalize the book this summer, after which we will hand it off to the printer to meet our target release date.

The book will be available in two states: 1) a hardcover version with printed covers and 2) a deluxe clothbound individually numbered limited edition housed in a clothbound presentation traycase. Each copy will be smyth-sewn with head and tail bands to provide a sturdy binding that will last for years to come.
