You may have Avatar which grossed over $2billion worldwide but the movie cost hundreds of millions to make.  Movie studios always like a good return on their movies but fronting the big budget up front can be a risky decision.  What if the movie bombs at the cinema?  That's why movie studios like financing low-budget movies.  Sometimes those movies will take the world by storm and bring a  huge low risk return for the studio.
