THEY LIVE POSTER

They Live

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a big pro-wrestling fan and as a result I've watched some terrible films over the years just because they feature a wrestler, John Carpenter's They Live most certainly does not fall into this category.

Roddy Piper is the pro wrestler in this film and although he may not be the best actor in the world but he oozes charisma that he is able to transfer from the ring to film in a way most other wrestlers have been unable to do. John Carpenter knew exactly what the Hotrod's skills were and allowed him to help choreograph his fight scene with Keith David and to add his own dialogue which is how the infamous line “I came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum” came about.

THEY LIVEWhilst re-watching They Live 25 years after it's initial release I was amazed at how well the themes in the movie stand up in 2013. The main backbone of the story revolves around the social divide between the haves and the have nots, those that have money are buying into the corporate brands and chains like sheep whereas the poor struggle to survive as companies lay off staff left right and centre.

Of course there is more to this film than social commentary, there are aliens who run the planet by using subliminal messages that can only be identified by wearing special sunglasses, this sounds tacky but its done in that John Carpenter way that just makes everything OK.

THEY LIVE SOUNDTRACKThis is a typical John Carpenter film, a slow but deliberate pace that gives time for the story to breathe without dragging, a strong story and his trademark keyboard soundtrack.

Despite having a good track record with good female leads including Adrienne Barbeau in The Fog and Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, Meg Foster doesn't live up to such scrutiny in They Live, if anything she looks uninterested and as though she was going through the motions, she is probably my least favourite aspect of this film which is a shame as I want to like her purely for playing Evil Lynn in the Masters of the Universe movie (she was also the original Cagney in Cagney & Lacey before she was dropped as the studio apparantly feared people would think that her portrayal of the character was a lesbian – I bet she left that off her CV when auditioning for this and future roles).

The aliens themselves look good for the most part and are only seen in Black and White for the majority of the film which allows suspension of disbelief when the effects do look a bit dodgy as you know that you are seeing an alternate view of the world, it's a clever little cheat.

I appreciate I will always be biased toward this film as it seems to mesh all my favourite things together, wrestling, sci-fi, a touch of horror and a big dose of John Carpenter but I really believe this film still stands the test of time and is a true cult classic.

Writing for The Bearded Trio, Rhys Thomas.

story arc clone wars

USA Today have published an exclusive clip from one of the yet to be released story arcs from The Clone Wars.  They also quote Dave Filoni who said:

"There are questions that are pretty big as far as it comes with the Clone Wars and things that people have wanted to know," Filoni says. "They're just these concepts just hanging out there, and finally we're going to deal with them."

One of the arcs stars Jedi Master Plo Koon (voiced by James Arnold Taylor), who finds a lost lightsaber while on a mission on a sandstorm-laden planet with a platoon of clone troopers. It's the beginning of a mystery, and one that will make the Jedi question their role in the Clone Wars and the universe itself, according to Filoni.
"The Jedi have been fighting a war with an army that was commissioned by one of their own, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas," he says. "But who was Sifo-Dyas, and what happened to him? The dark lord of the Sith has woven an intricate web to ensnare the Jedi, but it is not full-proof and sometimes a small clue, and a bit of chance, can lead to the unraveling of the best-laid plans."

Frank Gibeau, the leader of the labels division at publisher Electronic Arts, says that his company has never planned to buy developer LucasArts, directly contradicting information from sources inside the development studio.

The executive tells Kotaku that, “The entire game industry is in transition as we build more efficient organizations to deliver games on popular new platforms like mobile and consoles. EA is not currently considering any major acquisitions.”

The rumor appeared after Disney had announced that it would no longer use LucasArts to create first-party video games, although other developers will still have the chance to use well-known properties like Star Wars.

BBC News have reported that Pinewood Studios are to expand to the USA.  This is great news for the famous studio that is rich in movie history.

UK film studio Pinewood Shepperton has announced plans to build its first sound stages in the United States.
The Pinewood Atlanta complex will be built on 288 acres of land south of Atlanta, Georgia, as a joint venture with a US investment company.
Georgia has been among the US states drawing film-making away from Hollywood with tax incentives in recent years.
The deal is the latest sign of expansion at Pinewood, the home of the James Bond franchise.
Earlier this month it announced a joint venture with a Chinese media group, potentially giving it access to the fast-growing Chinese market.

Update 2.1 will add the Cathar to the BioWare multiplayer online game, as shown in the studio's latest trailer for the title.

The video below depicts the feline-esque characters wielding lightsabers and blasters, and appearing to offer similar attributes to many of Star Wars: The Old Republic's existing species.

Star Wars: The Old Republic introduced a free-to-play option in November, alongside the Cartel Market and an in-game reward scheme for existing subscribers.

Free-to-play users have full access to the game's story content and all eight classes up to and including level 50. However, players only have access to three of the playable races during character customisation - humans, zabrak and cyborgs.

Players are also limited to three Flashpoints, Warzones and Space Missions each week.

Everyone's favourite director, Steven Spielberg will preside over the jury for the 66th Cannes Film Festival who will be joined by Nicole Kidman and British director Lynne Ramsay.  Japanese director Naomi Kawase is also joining the star line up.

The male contingent on the jury will include French actor Daniel Auteuil. He received the festival’s Best Actor award in 1996 for his role in “Le huitieme Jour” with Pascal Duquenne.

Christolph Waltz is a less familiar face. having made his name as an SS officer in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film, “Inglorious Basterds.”

Two directors make up the numbers on the jury. Ang Lee has two “Best Director” Oscars under his belt, for “Brokeback Mountain” in 2006 and this year for “The Life of Pi.”

Pacific Business News reported on the 23rd that Jurassic Park IV is "one of four movies" pencilled in to start shooting in Hawaii.  The other movies being Godzilla, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and an untitled Cameron Crowe film (going by Deep Tiki.)

“Jurassic Park 4,” “Godzilla,” “Deep Tiki” and a fifth installment in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” blockbuster franchise are the latest Hollywood movies with plans to film in Hawaii, Pacific Business News has learned.

An industry source tells PBN that “Godzilla” plans to spend a month filming on Oahu and another month on Kauai, which is also slated to be featured — once again — in the dinosaur thriller “Jurassic Park,” which is on its fourth installment, scheduled to be released next year.

An official with the Hawaii Film Office wouldn't confirm this news, Georja Skinner, chief officer of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism's Creative Industries Division (which oversees the HFO) said that "Hawaii is a sought-after place for films."

Godzilla will be released on May 16, 2014, Jurassic Park 4 is set for June 13, 2014 and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will arrive on July 10, 2015. The Cameron Crowe film does not yet have a release date.

Jonathan Hicks is the role-playing and gaming editor for Jedi News.  He has also written reviews for RPG.net and published the free online RPG magazine ODDS.  Jonathan also wrote the dialogue for Universal's Battlestar Galactica game.  On top of all this he runs the RPG company Farsight Games.  In his own words he is a "writer, reviewer, tabletop gamer and professional nerd."

Here we go with the questions.

You're stuck in a swamp on Dagobah.  What one movie, TV show, album and book would you take?

Movie: Blade Runner. TV Show: Robin of Sherwood. Album: 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Book: The Lord of the Rings.

If you could invite any three people (alive or not, fictitious or not) to a dinner party, who would
gary gygax
Dungeons & Dragons Creator
 Gary Gygax
they be?

JRR Tolkien, Gary Gygax and George Lucas.

What is your favourite John Williams soundtrack?

The Empire Strikes Back.

If you were invisible for a day what would be the first thing you would do?

Have a damn good look around Lucasfilm.

When was the last time you cried?

Christmas.

What is your biggest fear?

Failure.

What was the most embarrassing moment of your life?

Arranging a big tabletop game at a gamer's convention, publicising it for weeks and getting really excited, and then sitting in the room on my own while lots of other games continued around me because nobody turned up to play mine.

Excluding search engines, what three website would you choose if no other websites were available?

IMDB, Facebook and www.farsightblogger.blogspot.co.uk - because it's mine!

Do you have any guilty pleasures?
crabbe flash gordon
Buster Crabbe as
Flash Gordon

I love watching classic 1930s serials, anything with Buster Crabbe. And I'm a fan of Disney's 'The Black Hole'.

What are you looking forward to the most in the next six months?

A great glut of sci-fi movies, completing my new writing project, appearing on The Bearded Trio website's 15 questions segment (bazinga!)

(Aw shucks - Rob)

What is your most treasured possession?

My books.

What is your biggest regret?

When I was in my early twenties, I tried to leave my nerd self behind and grow up as a real man, and so I sold a lot of my collection. It only lasted a few months but by then it was too late.

What are you most proud of?

My work on the Star Wars 'Setnin Sector' setting I did with Mark Newbold. It's all fan work, nothing official, but it's been the better part of thirty years in the making and it's a great place to play around in.

What is your favourite Spielberg movie?

Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Where can people keep in touch or follow you?

On Jedi News: www.jedinews.co.uk
My website: www.farsightblogger.blogspot.co.uk

star wars saga

"Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope," will be translated into the native Navajo language, Dine. It will be the first major motion picture to be translated and then voiced-over in the language.

"It is one of the best movies of all time," said Manuelito Wheeler, director of the Navajo Nation Museum.

Navajo Nation Museum and the Parks and Recreation Department recently teamed up with Lucasfilm, which gave the tribe permission to dub the film. Lucasfilm produced the original movie in 1977, as well as the series that followed.

he Navajo Nation is the first Native American tribe to dub the film into its own language, though worldwide the movie has been shown in more than 50 other languages, Hale said.

The Dine version is scheduled to debut July 4 at the Navajo Nation Fair in Window Rock, and the tribe is hoping to show it in area theaters later in the year.

Whether people will be able to ever purchase a copy of it is not yet known.

Shacknews has published a report that THQ owe various companies $200 million dollars including Lucasfilm for royalties on mobile games after filing for bankruptcy.

The claims (via Polygon) include studios like Volition and Vigil. The company also owes non-developers, like Microsoft for more than $200,000 in licensing fee, or UFC parent company Zuffa for $1.9 million in unpaid royalties. Codemasters seeks $1 million in royalties, and Double Fine is seeking $595,000 in royalties related to Stacking, Costume Quest, and the PlayStation Plus promotions surrounding those games.

Some of the largest sums come from THQ subsidiaries in Europe, Asia, and Australia, thanks to loans and interest. The ESA is seeking just over $190,000 for booth space reserved for E3 2013 that will go unused, and will instead be a "lounge area." Even LucasFilm has filed a claim for royalties on mobile games.

Playboy mag have published an interview with J.J. Abrams and it is a must read.  In the interview the Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Wars VII director opens up and mentions his feelings on being in the main chair for two of the biggest franchises in movie history.

"I couldn’t even entertain another thought. It was like being on the most beautiful beach in the world and someone saying, “There’s this amazing mountain over here. Come take a look.” I couldn’t balance the two, so I passed on Star Wars.

"I was near the light at the end of the tunnel with my work on Star Trek," continues Abrams. "I felt I needed a bit of a breather, actually. But then Kathleen Kennedy called again. I’ve known her for years. We had a great conversation, and the idea of working with her on this suddenly went from being theoretical and easy to deny to being a real, tangible, thrilling possibility. In the end it was my wife, Katie, who said if it was something that really interested me, I had to consider it."

He also mentions Cloverfield 2 and a possible Alias movie.  As I said its a must read.   Check it out here.

Alice Eve Naked Into Darkness
Alice Eve In Star Trek Into Darkness.

Over on E! Online Alice Eve of Star Trek Into Darkness recalls how she fell on her bum on the first day of shooting and how Zachary Quinto laughed the loudest.

"I ran onto the Enterprise and I fell over on my bum—on my first take!  It was one of those things that occurs, and it will never happen again. I was red, and I guess I had to laugh. It was that much of an embarrassment."

"[Zachary] Quinto was mean, though.  He laughed the loudest, which I'll never forgive him for," she said with a smile. "I have my clumsy moments. I probably do do it on all movie sets.
JJ Abrams commented on Alice's mishaps saying:
"There were a number of times that Alice Eve ran onto the set and fell on her ass," Abrams said. "But here's the thing, she always got up again for take two."

Steven Awalt has published his interview he did back in 2007 with Close Encounter's Production Designer Joe Alves.  An excellent interview and an interesting read.

If you’re a fan of Steven Spielberg’s earliest work in feature filmmaking, then there’s a darned good chance that you know the name Joe Alves. Alves enjoyed decades of great success in television and features as an art director, production designer and eventually a director (“Jaws 3.”) His most noted and celebrated work, however, would certainly be designing the productions of Spielberg’s first two hit films back-to-back in 1975’s “Jaws” and 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” If you’ve ever grinned at the quirky character of Quint’s ramshackle vessel the Orca, or marveled at the majesty of Devils Tower and Sky Harbor as the Mothership descended upon the waiting human beings, then you’ve thrilled to Alves’ vision in collaboration with Steven Spielberg.

ghostbusters 3 filming

Dan Aykroyd recently said that the long-awaited Ghostbusters 3 could be ready to go into pre-production at the end of this year, and begin shooting sometime in early 2014.

“I feel re-encouraged, reinvigorated by the pages that I have seen,” Aykroyd told ABC News. “I know that we’re expecting half of the screenplay to be completed very soon.”

“The Higgs boson and the particle theories, gluons and mesons, that really gives us a scientific base in terms of our fictional storytelling, to open up to another dimension and have something horrible come through,” he said.

“We’re going to really put it into ninth gear, in this third one,” Aykroyd continued. “It’s going to be very, very exciting. I’ve been more encouraged than I ever have been. It sounds real now. We’ve got a sharp new writer on it, [original director] Ivan (Reitman) is on it, Harold (Ramis) [who played Dr. Egon Spengler] is on it, I’m on it. And if I can put the catch-net on Billy [Murray, who played Dr. Peter Venkman] and bring him in, it will be wonderful, if he decides to do it. There will always be a hole for him.”

A team of game developers need your help in creating a rather impressive looking point and click adventure in the good old style of Monkey Island and other top notch adventure games of years gone by. Make sure to check out their video below and also the Kickstarter page http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/995134339/the-realm-game

The Vision

We are a group of experienced game developers asking for your help to make a unique and visually stunning graphical adventure. We will be using a combination of inspiring 3D and beautifully crafted 2D artwork to set a new artistic benchmark for the point and click genre, not just on PC and Mac, but on tablet devices too. We call our style ‘Western Art, Eastern Heart’.

We’re re-imagining the point and click adventure, bringing it up to date so that it can be played just as easily on touch screen devices as with a mouse. We've taken out complicated inventory screens and obscure puzzles and replaced them with the streamlined interactivity and intuitive design now expected of modern games.

So What Is 'The Realm'?

The Realm is set in a far distant future where the world has been reclaimed by nature. Our once proud cities now lie abandoned - overgrown with strange plants and twisted vines. The locations in The Realm reflect the real-life landscapes and architecture of the North East of England.

Some humans remain, but they are now leading a more simple life based around small rural communities entirely divorced from modern technology and science. The age of magic and mysticism has returned and there are rumours of stirrings in the forests.

The Realm follows the story of Sarina, a headstrong young girl who leaves the safety of her village to embark on a desperate quest to discover a cure for her sick mother. On her journey she befriends a legendary giant stone golem named Toru, a gentle but powerful creature, and the unlikely couple begin a treacherous adventure together.

Sarina and Toru travel across the wild and beautiful land to a forgotten city, where legend speaks of a flower growing with amazing healing properties. Their presence in the city awakens a long forgotten shadowy force that controls the Lampheads - mysterious plant-like creatures with a powerful and deadly gaze.

How Do I Play The Realm?

In The Realm, the player controls both our heroes - Sarina and Toru. To complete the adventure, the player must learn to utilize the unique abilities of both characters to solve the many puzzles and to overcome the many threats that dwell in The Realm.

Sarina is adventurous, feisty and smart. However, she is vulnerable to the many natural hazards and creatures found in the world. She is fast and nimble, but her size means that she is unable to perform many of the tasks required to progress. Luckily, Toru is able to lend his power in assistance.

Toru is a giant stone golem who has been dormant in the forest for a long time. He’s naive, pure and he can't remember his past. He fascinated and easily distracted by the wonders around him.

Slow moving but powerful, he is impervious to many hazards, and throughout the game he learns new skills and abilities from Sarina.

Only by leading Sarina and Toru through a number of beautiful but dangerous locations and solving a series of environment-based puzzles, will you be able to help our heroes fulfil Sarina's quest and help Toru discover his purpose.

Sarina and Toru can be moved around each location and interact with objects found within. When interacting with an object, each character is presented with a unique set of available actions, specific to the given context. There are characters that help, and others that hinder, and there are deadly traps and evil lurking in the shadows. You must use all your cunning to survive!

Making great games is a costly business - we know all too well as we've been making them for many years. We've already invested a significant amount of time and money into this project, but we still need your help to fund the development of the game. Of course from our total of £195K, we still need to pay Kickstarter, payment fees and then we need to make and post your wonderful rewards out of that too.

We estimate that it will take eight months to build the game and there’s lots of work to do in that time: designing puzzles, drawing the environments, the creatures, the objects, all the different animations, dressing the scenes, recording the music and sound effects, coding the game, and testing it.

We believe in this game, and we’re doing as much as we can with our own money and time, but there are no shortcuts to producing the beautiful game we want to create.

Stretch Goals

If we manage to exceed our target then any further funding will go straight into making the game even more fabulous.

We will spend every available penny on cramming as much beauty and enjoyment into the game as possible, but there are also some specific goals we’d like to achieve as well:

====> 250K - MORE CONTENT - We will extend the game experience by adding in more locations, characters and puzzles giving you a more engrossing in-depth adventure.

====> 300K - MORE PLATFORMS - It has always been our dream to see this game on tablet, and we have kept that in mind right from the beginning with a touch-screen friendly design. This level of investment will enable us to create an iPad and Android version too. ** We will also do a Linux version **

====> 350K - MORE MUSIC - We know Richard Jacques will do an amazing soundtrack for us, after all he’s won more awards than he can fit on his mantelpiece. If we raise this amount of money, we can afford to hire a real orchestra and bring his score to life!

Anything over that and we’ll invest in extra content such as new levels, more cut-scene footage, making the game longer and more in-depth. There is so much we’d like to do! We'll work with our supporters to finalise what we spend the extra budget on.

We showed the game to the usual publishers and, even though they all loved the concept, they weren't able to provide funding for this type of game.

It just doesn't tick the convenient boxes, or incorporate the latest buzzwords - it’s not freemium, it’s not social, and it’s not a cheap mobile puzzle game or a multi-million pound first person shooter. The Realm is a good old fashioned adventure game, made with love and care by dedicated artists and creators.

We sincerely believe that you will want to play this type of game too - something unique, innovative and engrossing. With your support we can prove that there is a market for this and bring this exciting project to life!

Kathleen KENNEDY, has said that The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm Ltd are seeking ever greater film-making collaboration in China.

Speeking at the Beijing International Film Festival, Kennedy who recently became president of Lucasfilm, described the attraction of China.

"The landscape of entertainment is changing — and a major part of that change — is China's growing role in the global film industry. – As a new member of the Disney family, — I speak for all of us — when I say — that we are thrilled to work with China. Disney and Lucasfilm are committed to working with the best filmmakers, wherever they are – and offering support to help develop young talent — however we can."

"The goal — is to grow China's homegrown animation talent, — develop projects, and deliver original content — that will reach people locally and around the world," Kennedy said. "To be able to export Chinese stories and culture — through this collective — is very meaningful to Disney, and it's something we are honored to be a part of."

Earlier, Lucasfilm cemented its visual effects pact with Beijing-Based provider Base FX.

On behalf of Disney she also revealed that the Hollywood studio has pledged a donation of $1 million the relief fund for Saturday's Sichuan earthquake.

Continuing our Forcecast special this week we have Eric Geller stepping up to the plate to answer our questions.  Eric joins Erik Blythe weekly in hosting the Forcecast podcast and is also the social media director for The Forcecast.net and the excellent Rebelscum.com.

Here we go.

You're stuck in a swamp on Dagobah.  What one movie, TV show, album and book would you take?
Movie: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
sw shatterpoint
TV show: The West Wing
Album: I’m not really into music. I’ll go with the Revenge of the Sith soundtrack.
Book: Star Wars: Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover (somewhat relevant if I’m trapped in a swamp!)

If you could invite any three people (alive or not, fictitious or not) to a dinner party, who would they be?
Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

What is your favourite John Williams soundtrack?
This is such a tough one. My favorite Star Wars music spans all six films. In The Phantom Menace, it’s the Droid Invasion Theme. In Attack of the Clones, it’s Across the Stars. In Revenge of the Sith, it’s Battle of the Heroes. In A New Hope, it’s Binary Sunset. In The Empire Strikes Back, it’s The Imperial March. In Return of the Jedi, it’s Victory Celebration.

But if I absolutely had to pick just one, it would probably be Victory Celebration. There’s just such a happy finality to it, as if we can all just sit back, relax, and reflect on what we’ve just seen. For a long time, that was the accepted end of the Star Wars film saga, and Victory Celebration really conveys that sense of bittersweet –– but still upbeat –– farewell.

If you were invisible for a day what would be the first thing you would do?
Probably sneak into Kathleen Kennedy’s office at Lucasfilm and watch the Episode VII-related decisions that came across her desk.

When was the last time you cried?
Two weeks ago.

What is your biggest fear?
Massive, public humiliation.

What was the most embarrassing moment of your life?
When I was young, I went to an acting camp and participated in several plays. One of them was a Sherlock Holmes spoof in which I played the lead role of “Sharklock Hog.” Midway through a monologue, I abruptly forgot the rest of my lines. The monologue quickly became a dialog as my fellow actors prompted me through the rest of the speech. I was mortified! The funniest part of that experience was that, after the play ended and the actors trouped off the stage, someone asked me for an autograph on their playbill!

Excluding search engines, what three website would you choose if no other websites were available?
If we’re excluding search engines, does that exclude all of Google’s other services? Because I probably couldn't live without Gmail and Google Calendar. If I can’t include the Google empire, I’ll say Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?
I eat far too many ice cream sundaes.

What are you looking forward to the most in the next six months?
Finishing my junior year of college and hopefully getting an exciting internship.

What is your most treasured possession?
I’m not sure which of my possessions has the most sentimental value to me, but the one item without which I can’t go anywhere is my phone.

What is your biggest regret?
Let’s just say you don’t know what you've got until it’s gone.

What are you most proud of?
My priorities in life and my values.

What is your favourite Spielberg movie?
Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Where can people keep in touch or follow you?
Twitter is the best way to follow everything I do, say, and think. I’m on Twitter as @ericgeller. My Star Wars news reports, interviews, reviews, and other writings appear at TheForce.Net, while my voice can be heard on The ForceCast podcast.

I want to thank both the hosts of The Forcecast for taking the time to answer the quick fire questions.  Click here to check part one, Erik Blythe's answers.

Next week we have roleplaying and gaming editor for JediNews, Jonathan Hicks.
